Lea Ypi joins PTO to talk about her new book Free: Coming of Age at the End of History. It tells Lea's story of growing up in Stalinist Albania, the end of communist party rule in 1990, and the country's slide into violent chaos in 1997. We talked about Albania's isolation during the cold war after schisms with first the Soviet Union, and then with China, and how the regime made sense of Albania's place in the world. We also discussed Lea's childhood and her reaction to learning that her parents were not the communist true believers she'd thought them to be. Finally, we talked about Lea's views on what liberalisation meant for Albania and why her experience of the post-communist transition left her profoundly sceptical about liberal notions of what constitutes a truly free society.

In this conversation with Eleanor Penny, the author of Steal As Much As You Can explains how works from Britain's largest national art collection have much to teach us about the making and maintaining of class oppression, from the dehumanisation of the working class in 18th century portraiture to Hogarth's fly-on-the-wall paintings acting as a forerunner of tabloid TV like Benefits Street.

With reference to Turner, Gainsborough, Jacob Epstein and the Young British Artists, Olah explains how art has been transformed into a PR-friendly asset for the ultra-rich and asks why self-styled "political art" so often fails as art.

Two friends, writers Damaris Caleemootoo and Oliver Pablo Herzberg, arrive in Edinburgh from London, the city that killed Daniel—his brother, her frenemy and loved by them both. Every day is different but the same. Trying to get to the library, they get distracted by bickering—will it rain or not and what should they do about their tanking bitcoin?—in the end failing to write or resist the sadness which follows them as they drift around the city. On such a day they meet Diego, a poet. They learn that Diego's mother was from the Chagos Archipelago, that she and her community were forced to leave their ancestral islands by soldiers in 1973 to make way for a military base. They become obsessed with this notorious episode in British history and the continuing resistance of the Chagossian people, and feel urged to write in solidarity. But how to share a story that is not theirs to tell? Natasha Soobramanien is based in Brussels. She is a writing tutor on the Lens-Based Media Masters Programme at Piet Zwart Institute Rotterdam. Is colonial capitalism making us sick? From the vast outdoors to the depths of our guts, centuries of colonialism have reordered life on the planet. In its wake have come the dubious efficiencies of giant agriculture and the uneven advances of modern medicine. We humans as affected by this reordering as any other earthly creature. And our bodies have responded to this colonial condition, in many cases, with inflammation. The body’s innate short-term response to infection has become, for many, a chronic condition. The world we have inherited is making us sick.

In their new book Inflamed: Deep Medicine and the Anatomy of Injustice, Rupa Marya and Raj Patel explore the history of medical inequity and environmental toxicity, our bodies’ responses to debt and night shifts, and the work of deep healing needed if we are all to become healthy again. In this conversation at once theoretical and highly practical, they discuss the 'exposome', how our metaphors of health prevent us from fully healing, and how we can make a world in which the whole web of life can start to heal.

This week’s episode of Novara FM, hosted by Eleanor Penny, surveys historical scars and shows a path to the recognition that the health of one is the health of all.

Her criticism appears regularly in venues such as Artforum, Cinema Scope, , and 4Columns. With Hila Peleg, she is the co-curator of the exhibition No Master Territories: Feminist Worldmaking and the Moving Image (HKW Berlin, 2022) and co-editor of the books Feminist Worldmaking and the Moving Image (2022) and Documentary Across Disciplines (2016), both published by MIT Press. In 2018, she was awarded a Philip Leverhulme Prize and the Katherine Singer Kovacs essay award from the Society for Cinema and Media Studies.
