The first single from Brain's brand new 'Trastorno EP' on Sofa Sound Bristol is a fully catchy groover alongside the unmistakable vocals of Manchester's Vispera.

"Trastorno EP" is a bold exploration of disorder and resilience, drawing from the raw intensity of punk and the relentless rhythms of drum and bass. The title, rooted in the Spanish word for "disorder," reflects the chaos of modern existence—psychological struggles, societal disarray, and the turbulence of identity in a fractured world.

The EP channels the artist’s roots, weaving cultural heritage into the sonic landscape. Traditional Latin American rhythms and emotional textures subtly emerge, reimagined through a punk-inspired lens of defiance and individuality. It’s a testament to the struggle of holding onto one’s identity while adapting to new realities, creating a bridge between past and present, tradition and rebellion.

Emotionally, "Trastorno EP" is a cathartic release—an expression of frustration, hope, and transformation. The airport felt endless, with ceilings so high they disappeared into clouds of light. I didn’t remember buying a ticket, yet here I was, suitcase in hand and passport trembling between my fingers. My name echoed faintly over the loudspeakers, as if the world itself was calling me forward.

Outside the windows, planes rose like silver birds into a dawn that looked too clean to be real. My chest tightened with both fear and wonder. I wasn’t running from anything, but I wasn’t entirely sure what I was heading toward either.

When they called my flight, something inside me whispered that this was it, the beginning of something that would never let me go back to who I was. My steps were slow but steady, the carpet humming beneath my shoes, the air heavy with the scent of coffee, jet fuel, and departure.

The plane was small, almost fragile, like it had been stitched together from old dreams. I found my seat beside the window. The clouds outside drifted lazily, like ghosts waiting for permission to move. The seatbelt clicked, the engine stirred, and suddenly gravity loosened its grip.

As the ground fell away, my fear rose to meet it. Cities turned to patterns, rivers to threads, the world to a soft blur of distance. My palms were cold. Yet through the fear, there was a pulse, an ache of excitement, like the first breath before a confession.

I watched the horizon curve and realized I was flying not just to another country, but away from the version of myself I no longer needed to be. Each mile in the sky felt like a page turning. The air shimmered with everything I hadn’t said, hadn’t dared to dream.

At some point, I closed my eyes. In the dark behind them, I saw moments of my old life, the walls I’d built, the faces I’d left behind, the quiet longing that had always whispered that there must be more. Then, slowly, that voice turned into something clearer: there is.

When the plane began to descend, the light shifted. The new land below was painted gold by the setting sun, strange and alive, waiting. My fear didn’t vanish, but it softened, melting into something almost holy. The engines roared, the wheels touched the unknown, and for the first time in a long while, I smiled.

It didn’t matter what awaited me beyond the gate. What mattered was that I’d left the shore of my old life behind, that I had dared to take flight, trembling wings and all.

Beginnings are rarely comfortable. They are terrifying, beautiful leaps into skies we’ve never seen, and that’s what makes them real.

Future Engineers - Scratch In The Surface (Sunchase Remix)

The 8th release from The Dreamers celebrates one year of activity of the label with a sublime EP from HLZ, former Need for Mirrors member and experienced producer, with releases on many important drum and bass labels. The EP starts with the “From the past” title track, a breath taking liquid roller that sets the mood for the entire work and features dreamy vocals from 'Awakem'. Track B. “Dream source” brings you to an oneiric dimension rolling over a solid beat while the track C. “Nightcrawler” is a lush combination of glitchy beats, deep bass and classic drum and bass atmospheres. Track D. “Sparkles” closes the EP with a fast footwork vibe.

For five years, Santoku has remained a pinnacle within the world of US drum & bass. They’ve delivered various packages of fresh sonic transatlantic, helping to push the genre on not just American soil, but also across the full global market. And this year marks their 5th anniversary, with three releases to celebrate half a decade committed to giving platforms to both newcomers and more refined talent throughout the 174bpm sound spectrum.

Their next LP will be the first stepping stone towards this five-year commemoration, with its namesake hinting at the full albums content. ‘Jutsu’ continues the theme of Santoku, translated from Japanese into ‘technique’ – alluding to the fact that the entire album is comprised of remixes. Included on the LP are previously released tracks which have become a definitive part of the Santoku discography, as well as four brand new reworks from the likes of Gridlok, Myselor, A-Cray and Logam.

Gridlok needs little introduction, and neither does his groove-ridden retake on Mayhem and label head Logam’s ‘All I Do’. It sets a standard for the rest to follow, including the cutting percussion of Amoss’ remix of Mayhem & Logam’s ‘Centuria’ and the punching bass of A-Cray’s ‘Leviathan’ switch up. The mesmerising tribalism of Quadrant & Iris brought into Logam’s ‘Hypnotic’ acts as a release stand out, alongside Nickbee tackling Mayhem & Logam’s ‘Infinity’ with his longstanding, high quality production engineering. Then comes Eatbrain head honcho Jade’s remix of Logam & Mayhem’s ‘Ourboros’, paying homage to its forbearer but also implementing the chaotic atmospherics and crushing mechanics which makes Jade so infamous. Emerging icon Des McMahon’s track ‘The Hawk’ is given a treatment by Mean Teeth, adding another biting dimension to the original. Logam also adds his twist on McMahon’s style, bringing ‘Delirium’ into unfamiliar territories. And finally, Zero T has his minimalistic yet meticulously fashioned features brought into Hajimari’s ‘Analgesic’ and Myselor delivers Mayhem & Logam’s ‘Orion’ through his lens.

Together they encapsulate the five years Santoku has spent dedicating to their artist’s craftsmanship. And it’s a monumental release, one which sets them up to reach a decade of releases – especially whilst dropping music of this calibre.
