«...Instrumental timbres also play a crucial role on The New Cycle by Karelian sound collagist Sergey Suokas, who sought to make a "surrealistic imitation’, of the kind of music that informed his early techno records, but here assembled from recordings of drums, strings, wind instruments and traditional Karelian instruments played by the trio Yarga.

After a ruminative start with spartan sax lines and strings seesawing queasily over double bass pulses, Suokas gets into his groove, using bass drum, snare and hi-hat to produce a sort of house rhythm. And although it's looped, the acoustic quality of the percussion gives it a different energy and greater animation than it would have got from purely synthetic beats, and it hops along with gnawing double bass drones and melodic hook lines.

Suokas has created an audacious instrumental palette, with its every sound feeling out of context. ’Skygger" has an unexpected dolorous string coda, while on ’Ruva", the basic bass drum pulse is augmented by a matrix of plucks and scrapes, plus cawing rustic reed instruments. The rhythms get further warped on "J9", with its relentless drum kit breakbeats and busy bass. But it works on its own terms. And yes, you can dance to it.»

«Sergey Suokas is a Russian of Finnish heritage and has spent the last decade exploring techno’s more outré outlying areas, as well as investigating the ethnic music of his native Karelia region. The idea behind The New Cycle is similar, in principle, to the work of German techno-classical fusion outfit Brandt Brauer Frick but, whereas they developed a style based around the virtuosic disciplines of the auditorium, Suokas has a folkish, archaic feel. It’s an album built from traditional organic instrumentation (piano, violin, cello, etc) but enhanced by a juniper wood Karelian folk clarinet called a liru, as well as field recordings, all riding over a 4/4 pulse that nails it to the clubland idiom. It’s an interesting experiment that acknowledges the way techno’s hypnotic qualities relate to much older sound rituals of aboriginal tribal peoples.»
