Out in November 2013 fully licensed 45 issue of Roy Roberts' sublime 70s Modern Soul dancer 'Thinking About You'. This is the fist release from Soulstacks Records under the Country Star label and is limited to 300 copies worldwide. 

In 1974 Roy Roberts – a well known and respected bluesman (and latterly familiar name on the Northern Soul scene) –  changed course, shifted gears and temporarily abandoned his soul and blues roots to embark on recording a Country album. The venture was designed, in part, to widen his appeal far beyond his local audience in the Greensboro area of North Carolina, as well as opening up new opportunities in what was a booming and vibrant marketplace. The result was his ‘Country Star’ long player: nine self penned numbers that ranged from tried and tested traditional Country themes to tracks that barely reigned in the blues influence veterans of that music have – almost against their will – coursing through their veins. It was no doubt an earnest project in which Roy proudly staked his claim within a genre not known for embracing African-American bluesmen with more than a decent back catalogue of soul releases. The fact that this was probably Roy’s only attempt at breaking the Country market maybe tells us that the public weren’t ready for his particular brand of blues inflected C&W.

The aces in the pack, quietly waiting to be discovered by soul fans – perhaps only decades later – was the inclusion of two stunning Soul moments almost defiantly tacked onto the end of the set as if to say ‘right, you’ve had that, now here’s what I really do…’.

‘Thinking About You’ is a fantastic dancer that rides along on a groove underpinned by bubbling percussion and spacey synths and with no 7″ release at the time, it’s the reason that soul people have been hunting down a mainly Country album. The other soul cut on the set, ‘You And Me Together’ was actually issued on a 7″ single although the album version, coming in at over six minutes, is well worth the time invested.

For the flip side of our 45 we’ve chosen a later moment from Roy’s back catalogue, the 1979 disco soul of ‘Let’s Wrap Up Tonight Baby’: a homemade, slightly minimal four minutes plus of raw dancefloor grooves designed to keep the feet in perpetual motion.

Having founded the deephouse empire Freerange Records this DJ and producer of outstanding merit knows exactly how to trim club music in order to cause frenzy on almost every dancefloor on this planet. His remix of “Bits Of Me” is taking the route towards Berlin School techno sure enough and gains pace, especially on the dub version.

The second track, “Hold Your Head Up”, remixed no more than four times (on the digital release), features the soul-soothing voice of Sonar Kollektiv act Arnold Kasar, who is working on his new solo album(!). Taking these vocal parts to account in particular, the remix by Dortmund based Larse embeds them into a sophisticated arrangement. Which could be shelved somewhere between smooth deep house and the contemporary interpretation of Boogie, which Larse is firmly campaigning for for a while now.
Berlin based Max Heese aka Langeberg (Drumpoet Community, Dessous Recordings etc.) attends to the matter in a total different way by pumping up the song with adrenaline and a hearty dash of testosterone. In over eight minutes you can witness the genesis of a danceable power bar. The 23-years old Kai von Glasow from Berlin is responsible for the probably most neoteristic remix in this series. His interpretation sees the encounter of hypermodern dub aesthetics and bass music how it should sound in 2014.

Last but not least and – as well as the remix by Kai von Glasow – only available on the digital release you get the version by Nils Penner. Having released already on Freerange Records and Wazi Wazi Music, the DJ and producer living in Munich impresses with a ludicrous drum and percussion programming while getting almost cosmic with the interweaving synth pads.

Five, or six remixes (if you count the dub version by Jimpster), which show again strikingly what is and will be the score in the best clubs worldwide in the next few months.

Although no major company wanted to pick up “Let’s Go – It’s Summertime”, and “Jody’s Freeze” By James Reese and The Progressions or “Throwing Stones” and “Gee Whiz” by Marlene King, James felt that what he had written and arranged was unique. Therefore he continued to write, using Jazz chords and progressions along with some occasional classical motifs and mixed those elements with danceable rhythms.
 
*( Concerning “Let’s Go – It’s Summertime” Many of the major labels that James talked with in New York said that his writing was "way ahead of my time", and they wasnt wrong!!!
 
 
James Reese was a Public School Band Director during those years, and during his breaks and in the band room he would sit down at the piano and work on ideas for songs. Also, Rosalyn Foster (a college student with a strong voice) had joined The Progressions in the early seventies and James quickly began to write with her voice in mind.
 
 By spring break of 1972 we were ready to go to Memphis, Tenn. We didn’t have a drummer who could make the trip (Willie Hill, AKA B. Hill had moved to LA, California) so James hired a drummer when he arrived.. His name was Willie Hall, one of the Bar Kays drummers and he flowed with us instantly. James remembers recording at night, and then staying up during the daytime working on the string parts.

The final recording sessions that never got released were called 
"joker (where did you come from)"  and "he'll never go".   Its almost criminal to think these two beautifully crafted soul songs, where musicians have put all their time and efforts into, were shelved because so called executives thought them  "ahead of their time"

Brenda Boykin is a fine blues and jazz singer who was born March 30th 1957 in Oakland, California and was working in San Francisco by the time I got to know her. The famous blues/jazz critic Lee Hilderbrand once wrote that Brenda had ‘the most authentic creative voice of this generation’. I’m sure we could all argue about that until the cows come home but I have enjoyed her music since hearing her first CD in 1997 on Blue Dot 102, which was named after the band she was working with, called ‘Home Cookin’, a second 'Home Cookin’ CD on Blue Dot 103 ‘Afrobilly Soul Stew’ issued in 2004 confirmed my interest. During this time I assumed that she was simply working as a blues singer in local clubs but, infact, she was also working and appearing at the San Francisco Blues Festival, The Monterey Jazz Festival and the DuMaurier Jazz Festival in Vancouver.

I then lost sight of Brenda until a chance telephone conversation with one of the 'Home Cookin' band members informed me of her relocation to Wuppertal in 
Germany. A search on the Internet in 2005 revealed that she was now working with the Ulrich Rasch Jazz Quartet and had transformed from a good blues singer to an excellent jazz/blues singer. I contacted Ulrich Rasch with the idea of booking her together with the band for a Shakedown gig and was sent the bands demo CD which was outstanding and included wonderful ‘live’ renditions of ‘Next Time You See Me’, ‘The Letter’, ‘House of The Rising Sun’, ‘Money’, and ‘Whole Lot Of Shakin’. That year saw her appearing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. After this the band fell apart and thoughts of a Shakedown gig faded.

At some point after this she began working with the Nu-Jazz Project issuing CD’s on Chin Chin Records including her recent interesting solo album ‘Chocolate and Chili’. A copy of this arrived at about the time that I was booking Katherine Davis and the idea which had been floating in my mind for sometime of presenting blues singers with modern jazz bands solidified into a couple of 'When jazz & blues collide' shows - the second of which became Brenda's Shakedown gig. We then asked Nick Page to organise a blues orientated jazz quintet and he came up with the following amazing line-up: guitarist Nick Page a Barney Kessel / Kenny Burrel stylist; Colin Watkins on tenor sax played with amongst others 'Humph' and Walter Trout; Nick Hill trumpet and flugel horn – worked with Alan Skidmore and Gilad Atzmon; Russel Williams, Hammond organ played with everybody including the brothers Skidmore; John Scotney, drums who seems to have worked with anybody who is anybody including Mel Torme!
