Q&A with layer zero:

1. What inspires you to mix/make music?
I have always been captivated by the energy of the dancefloor, and I guess at one point I decided I wanted to experience the feedback loop from the other side. These days I make mixes to ski to on my lunch break but I don't make them public- it's very compatible with my high-nrg selections.

2. Are you looking forward to anything in 2021 in regards to your creative activities?
Im not ready for the snow to melt but when it does iI will eventually head back to the city. I don't exactly know yet what comes after that but I hope we dance together again.

December Alarm

Previously having released with Sweat Equity under the collaborative project DIVORCE, Los Angeles's Calculator's (né Dylan Kario) solo output runs the gamut from twisted high-speed techno to warped breaks and broken-beat excursions. But the producer and DJ is also quite an avid Dance Dance Revolution head, and, for this outing with the SE crew, turns in a neck-breaking two hour compilation of tracks from a range of DDR versions, showcasing both his own taste for a perfect track to left-left-right-left-up, and for his ability to blend them together. Hold on to your hats, this is a wild one.  First aired on Dublab for Callie Ryan's show, it moves all the way up from 125 to 221 BPM and back. A dry towel and a bottle of water are a must for this session, and don't forget some comfy shoes :D

1. What inspires you to mix/make music?
Gilles Peterson has a quote describing "Speak No Evil" by Wayne Shorter, where he said that the second he heard that album, he knew he would never need to go to therapy in his life. To me music is not only a therapist, but also a teacher, and a life-long friend whose existence I elate in sharing.

2. How has 2020 changed your relationship to music?
I wouldn't say 2020 has changed my relationship to music, and if anything my love for music has only grown stronger during quarantine. The kinds of music I have been listening to is different from years past. Downtempo, electronica, and other non-clubby genres make up the bulk of my 2020 listening.
