Spruce Hill

Inspired by a New Scientist article about human remains in Spain’s El Mirador Cave—bones bearing cut marks, boiling evidence, and signs of deliberate consumption—"Cannibal Cave" dives into a darker chapter of Neolithic life. Drawing on ideas from Joseph Jordania’s Why Do People Sing, the song blends raw storytelling with pounding rhythm to capture the ritual, humiliation, and warfare that may have driven this ancient act. It’s not famine, but victory and vengeance, echoing through 5,700 years of history.

Cannibal Cave

“Red Dust Rhapsody” is an ambient, cinematic journey inspired by news of Italy becoming SpaceX’s first Mars customer. Layering ethereal melodies, rhythmic pulses, and a blend of electronic and organic textures, the track evokes the vast, alien landscapes of the Red Planet and the solitary awe of exploration. Its verses trace the inner dialogue of a lone traveler under a pale Martian sun, while the chorus drives home the unshakable presence of red dust—on boots, in the soul, and in the truth of the mission.

Inspired by a new law signed by Governor Kelly Ayotte, this bluegrass tune tells the cautionary tale of wrong-way drunken driving in New Hampshire. From hefty fines and jail time to breathalyzers in your car, “Wrong-Way Blues in the Granite State” lays out the penalties in a toe-tapping, banjo-free, fiddle-and-mandolin-driven romp. And in true New Hampshire fashion, the same bill also made the Virginia opossum the official state marsupial—thanks to some determined fifth graders. A mix of sharp-eyed commentary and back-porch humor, this song captures the Granite State’s unique blend of law and local color.

“Sturgeon Moon” drifts between water and sky, weaving deep bass currents with shimmering synth light to honor August’s ancient full moon. Named for the great lake sturgeon — a living fossil that swam alongside dinosaurs — this track blends dark ambient textures with electronic pulses, evoking the pull of timeless waters and the quiet rituals of late-summer nights.

The music arcs between wonder and resolve, fading into a distant, hopeful drone—an echo of humanity’s dreams carried across the stars.

Inspired by my youngest son’s generation and their surprising shift away from smartphones, this 110 BPM indie pop/synthwave track blends retro flair with modern dance energy. Chiptune leads echo classic Nokia ringtones, lo-fi drums and vinyl crackle give it analog warmth, and jangly guitars ride alongside shimmering synths. Lyrically, it’s a celebration of freedom from constant pings and scrolling—a “retrotech revival” where Gen Z swaps apps for keypads, privacy, and pure connection.

Move-in Mayhem is my tongue-in-cheek tribute to one of the Pioneer Valley’s busiest and most colorful traditions: the annual UMass Amherst student move-in. Every late August, Route 9 and 116 overflow with cars packed to the brim, families juggling boxes, and students starting fresh adventures.

This song captures the traffic jams, the closed roads, the laughter, the stress—and the energy that comes when tens of thousands of new and returning students breathe life back into the Valley. From early check-ins to the official rush between August 27 and September 1, “Move-in Mayhem” tells the story in a playful, folksy way that locals will recognize instantly.

I recorded it with the spirit of community in mind: a mix of humor, observation, and a bit of empathy for everyone stuck in those long lines of cars. Whether you’re a student, a parent, or a Pioneer Valley resident bracing for the annual gridlock, this one’s for you.
