This morning I woke up to terror such as I have never experienced before: I was entirely stripped of feeling. Everything was gone; it was as if I had lost something that had been entrusted to me the previous evening, something I was supposed to take special care of overnight. I was in the position of someone who has been assigned to guard an entire sleeping army, but suddenly finds himself mysteriously blinded, deaf, and effaced. Everything was gone. I was completely empty, without pain, without longing, without love, without warmth and friendship, without anger, without hate. Nothing, nothing was there anymore, and I was left like a suit of armor with no knight inside

Of course there is a lot of misery, but it is the same misery that's all around us. The trees here are in misery. The birds are in misery. I don’t think they sing, they just screech in pain. Nature here is violent. I would see fornication, and asphyxiation, and choking. And fighting for survival, and growing, and just rotting away

The EP "HEALING" dedicates us to some reflection on our soul and what is happening around our mind. From catharsis, we move on to healing our consciousness from the past, from any past that caused us pain. This process is very similar to a mechanism that does not work systematically, but chaotically, similar to the behavior of marble, which the sculptor inspect before making a statue.

The Helsinki-based multidisciplinary artist Exmantera (Daniil Mantere, they/them) https://soundcloud.com/exmantera is one of the prominent names in the Finnish underground digital electronic scene, and they’re known for their abrasive, knife-sharp outings where crispy sound design meets clangy dramatic tension. After hosting a remix on last year’s “Ross 308 EP” by the also Finnish artist Comastasis https://paynomindtous.bandcamp.com/track/ross-308-exmantera-remix, we’re thrilled to share with you their latest work “LETHALITY” EP.

“LETHALITY” is composed of seven tracks and comes with an eerie, obscure artwork by Exmantera and uzâ a’amo instagram.com/uzaaamo/ as well as two collaborative tracks with Nova Caine @n0vad0sed and Yaokai @yaokai. As evoked by its title, the record is unforgiving in its sonic violence, aggressive distortion, and clangorous instinctiveness. Episodes inspired by the finest instrumental grime are followed by ear-splitting bursts, metallic percussions, glitching artifacts, and sinister melodies. These raw ingredients are molded into eventful tracks that immediately capture the listener despite the unrestrained rhythmic violence, guiding them down a treacherous path of digital corrosivity. In other words, Exmantera encapsulates spectacular ferocity and immaculate bloodlust in each of the compositions, molding the elements in the ultimate sound transposition of the impulse to maw, gnaw, and kill. Influenced by keygen, noise, and elevator music, they co-produced a track that could be either played in a club or used as a menu theme in some indie video game. It also takes its title from an item in SMITE. Hidden references and the overall vibe of the track play really well with the album’s theme and cover art, and together form a solid opening track.

Emma dj doesn't give much away when it comes to his music. Twelve effortless stabs at post-bloghouse electronics brings the Paris-based, Finnish producer’s oeuvre out of the trap torpor of recent releases on Lee Gamble’s UIQ label, into the ecstatic crush of a world in chaos with the Lay2g LP on Danse Noire. Looking back at the late-2000s, early-2010s collision of the club and the stage, the album beckons to another era. It’s one of warehouse bands and indie sleaze, dance punk and industrial noise; a turn-of-the-millennium time where youth culture was rife with an after-9/11 nihilism so potent that an electro-drone band with a name like “Fuck Buttons” could be part of an Olympic opening ceremony.

Lay2g’s direct and dance-floor-friendly tracks with meaningless titles gleefully bump up against each other, whether in the crumbling industrial force of “I Fuck With Lies” or the propulsive gabber tempo of “Kd9.” It’s inspired by Emma’s early music education through hype.fm music charts and Dim Mak Records, with its echoes of Atari Teenage Riot’s digital hardcore or The Bloody Beetroots’ hoover synths. Crunchy, distorted, subs prop up the epic organ patches and math-y rhythmic structures of “RR.dkn.” A lumbering bass on “bQosYe” follows the lead of shattered top-end breakbeats and a syncopated vocal cut-up.

Managing the pain of contemporary reality with a sense of humor and humility is fundamental to the Nordic artist’s output, whether it’s in the wobbly subs of 2019’s Support Your Local Enemies or the offhand titling of 2023’s follow-up to Godrime, g0drm2. Meanwhile, Lay2g is a powerful, lightly-sardonic signpost in the no wave and mutant disco continuum, and a welcome harbinger of Paris’ deeply buried underground as it rears its uninhibited head.
