Get ready for an 80’s dancehall / roots revival with this killer release from Queens, NY’s new Rock Steady dons, The Frightnrs. This four piece ensemble have taken the cooled out vintage vibes of Jamaican Rock Steady, combined it with the raw energy and vocal stylings of 80’s Rub A Dub and added a touch of punk rock spirit to create an entirely unique sound that redefines what a reggae band can sound like. They recently broke through with a soaring cover of Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind” on NY’s esteemable Daptone Records, and have now give us this great 5 track EP for Mad Decent. The Daptone connection should give you an idea of the genuine sound we’re dealing with here- this is the real deal vintage vibes, polished into a beautiful roughness by longtime NY producer Victor “Ticklah” Axelrod. Like Diplo says, “Close your eyes and get transported to Kingston Jamaica 1981.”

Whether hailing from the US (DDAY ONE, NICKODEMUS, MAKER), the UK (DIESLER), France (AZAXX, HUGO KANT), Greece (CAYETANO, FLECK, KILL EMIL), Slovenia (JK SOUL) or the ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS' homebase of Germany (PROTASSOV, RAZOOF) – the featured remixers have all been chosen for the friendship and admiration they've shared with the 'nauts.

The Pharcyde from AA´s debut album We Are To Answer. His remix of Still A Soldier shows of his fine skills as a producer and DJ with his trademark style of warm and tight beats combined with killer scratches. To round up this remix and give it a real organic feel Brace invited some friends to his studio to add Kora (Zal Sissokho) and Darbuka (Guillaume Fouquet). "Switchstance" is taken from the culture of boardsports, meaning the skill used to change the stance (easily) by switching one's foot position. The stance in freestyle Snowboarding or Skateboarding, is either riding in "regular" (left foot forward) or "goofy" (right foot forward) position. This identifies a really skilled rider and opens up a whole new world of trick combinations.

The label's creed and therefore the style of its producers and DJs is to have ultimate freedom, whether in their musical movements or in "switching" between various styles. The aim of the label is to combine early musical influences such as Funk, Jazz, Latin, 90´s Hip Hop and Reggae with the most progressive techniques of electronic music production in order to create a new dynamic sound that pays respect to the diverse cultures it comes from. It is the soundtrack of the lives of artists that dedicate their time and energy to produce cutting-edge grooves for a conscious and openminded generation.

Inspired by the label members' and friends' lifestyles in music, boardsports, arts and travels; the sound of Switchstance is always in motion and reflects a unique vision and attitude towards modern life.
