The first song written for the record, Bertie banged out the rhythm on her desk while in Chicago, later banging it out again on walls, a door and a toy drum kit in the studio. “It’s a bit of a Where the Wild Things Are for me, getting in to the boat, kicking the ground, pouting and having a bit of a rumpus.” Bertie and Franc ditched a distorted accordion in the mix after hearing the results of guest guitarist Kirin J. Callahan, whose violent, guttural sound was laid down without direction from the songwriter or producer.

Our guest in Hour 2 is Banks with his second appearance on Solid Steel and starts with one of two remixes for Ninja Tune. First up it's his transformation of The Keeper by Bonobo and then it's onto Deco Child, the excellent Anti-Pop Consortium from their album on Big Dada, before dropping his second remix which is a sublime rework of 'Lost where I belong' by Andreya Triana. The mix continues to flow with Modeselektor, Orbital from '94, Lusine and the collaboration between Four Tet, Burial and Thom Yorke. It's uptempo in the second half with Dauwd, another Bonobo remix, our guest in hour 1 Martyn and a remix for the Carl Craig classic 'At Les', before closing the show with his unreleased remix of 'Strong the root' by Lamb.

Here's my set from New Years 2012-2013 at an event called "Inspire Truth" in Portland, Oregon with 2900 people and three stages! I ended up playing 14 tracks/remixes I created (6 unreleased tracks), and then ended with a few other tracks. I was playing on a nicely tuned Funktion 1 rig and had lot's of family around, which was really warm :) I played a bit more psychedelic/unorthodox music than usual, partly because it was a late night set (2:40-4:05am) and partly because I thought it would be an interesting contrast to much of the other music I was hearing at the event. The intention with this is as it's always been.. to help provide a healing space for connecting with ourselves and the cosmos :)

On Solid Steel, we like to go deep and as part of our celebrations in Hour 2, we welcome DJ Scientist with Solid Soviet Steel Radio (SSSR), a special guest mix that solely features music from the former Soviet Union. The dedicated record collector, DJ and Equinox record label owner from Berlin managed to unearth and put together an extensive and fascinating selection of tracks from countries like the Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldavia, Russia and more, resulting in a unique musical adventure. The mix starts with a deep and slow psych part, coming up with more funk-laden Soviet grooves and killer instrumental breaks. Many of these groups managed to create their own kind of sound, mixing western styles like Jazz, Funk and Rock with traditional music from their own countries. It's been a while since our last guestmix, and what better way to keep it lit then with an exclusive mix from an artist that's a housemate of the label and a friend, Satin Jackets. The last year has been a big one for this German based outfit (no pun intended) with releases currently sitting high on Beatport charts, productions in great demand, a worldwide following and the kicking off of the first series of live shows all over the place. Judging by the outfits work ethos this is only going to be the tip of the iceberg. 

Satin Jackets trademark sound is slow, sultry and brimming with optimism and todays mix reinforces this aesthetic. With a BPM that's in no hurry this mix is full of summer heat. With plenty of hooky vocals and a non pretentious approach to track selection this typifies Satin Jackets ethos of music to make you smile. We caught up with Tim and Den to ask them a few questions, some pertinent and some pointless.

"Switchstance" is taken from the culture of boardsports, meaning the skill used to change the stance (easily) by switching one's foot position. The stance in freestyle Snowboarding or Skateboarding, is either riding in "regular" (left foot forward) or "goofy" (right foot forward) position. This identifies a really skilled rider and opens up a whole new world of trick combinations.

The label's creed and therefore the style of its producers and DJs is to have ultimate freedom, whether in their musical movements or in "switching" between various styles. The aim of the label is to combine early musical influences such as Funk, Jazz, Latin, 90´s Hip Hop and Reggae with the most progressive techniques of electronic music production in order to create a new dynamic sound that pays respect to the diverse cultures it comes from. It is the soundtrack of the lives of artists that dedicate their time and energy to produce cutting-edge grooves for a conscious and openminded generation.

Inspired by the label members' and friends' lifestyles in music, boardsports, arts and travels; the sound of Switchstance is always in motion and reflects a unique vision and attitude towards modern life.
