EPM Podcast 145 comes from Adam Stolz. Growing up in Kalamazoo he counts both Chicago and Detroit as heavy influences (alongside a life-long love of hip hop). As one half of Rico & Sonny, Adam had been working on a new artistic project alongside Tim Baker, who sadly passed away this year. The fruits of their labours will eventually see the light of day and their first release can be found on EPM’s third ‘EPM20’ EP alongside tracks from Eddie Fowlkes, Jon Dixon and DJ 3000. Now Adam gets behind the decks, taking the techno night train with tracks from Justin Berkovi, Robert Hood, G Flame, Alden Tyrell, Cri du Coeur, Lester Fitzpatrick, D-Knox, M.F.S: Observatory and more.

Raised in a household where music was on all day, Adam developed an avid interest and ear for music from early childhood. His father spent time in the music business promoting parties in Western Michigan, bringing artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Alice Cooper and the like to enthusiastic fans in concert. Being surrounded with stories of artists and renowned musicians heavily influenced Adam’s desire to find himself musically as an artist. In the early 90s, he spent time at his local record store mixing while his friends started appreciating his ear for new music. Adam naturally progressed to find a path in DJing, producing and mixing, and has since shared decks with globally renowned artists such as Nightmares on Wax and Alex Bau. 

At the core a visual artist, Adam’s music production process is very conceptual, ‘I view music very much like I would a painting, layered’. Growing up around Kalamazoo, MI he was heavily influenced by the Kzoo Techno scene and the amazing artists that came from the city (Jay Denham, D-Knox, Fanon Flowers, Chance McDermott). Around 2010, he was asked to put out a release on Black Nation Records and from there he went on to produce two releases for Prosthetic Pressing that morphed into classic dance floor remixes for his productions by artists such as Dan Curtin, Lee Curtis and Frankie Vega. He has also had releases on Cryovac Recordings & Elephanthaus Records. Adam’s music range is wide albeit focusing on hip hop, techno and house. With musical knowledge and experience under his belt, Adam collaborated with several artists such as Ryan Boos, releasing a trip-hop style album ‘Open Channel’, rooted in hip-hop, soul and folk. Currently, he is in the process of releasing a few bangers that he had co-produced in collaboration with his late friend and Detroit + Chicago legend, Tim Baker. 

If techno and hip-hop weren’t enough, Adam has recently started exploring opportunities in film, in a debut collaboration, scoring for the independent Chicago feature film production, ‘Rushed Submission’.
