Excerpt of the soundinstallation RAW at Kunstverein Leverkusen Castle Morsboich.

"The entrance to the actual exhibition space is blocked by a sound wall set up frontally, requiring entry from the side. Four further black acoustic wall modules, three of them reinforced in their martial effect by pyramid foam, have been set up in such a way that they virtually force the visitor into the middle of the room. As if into an arena. Standing there, one finds oneself surrounded by Julia Bünnagel's sound composition*, by the fragments of alienated marching music, by rumbling and hissing, the sound of marching that echoes through the room. Because through these baffles, which, unlike normal loudspeakers, do not send the sound in one direction but release it into the entire room, it can unfold its ultimately manipulative power here in a very intense way. Sound is an extremely subtle instrument of power - like language, like a message repeated over and over again. The sound installation with the title RAW, in German roh, results in WAR when read backwards. "

"Der Eingang in den eigentlichen Ausstellungsraum ist geblockt von einer frontal aufgestellten Schallwand, die ein seitliches Betreten erfordert. Vier weitere schwarze, akustische Wandmodule, drei davon durch Pyramidenschaumstoff in ihrer martialischen Wirkung noch verstärkt, sind so aufgestellt worden, dass sie den Besucher geradezu in die Mitte des Raumes zwingen. Wie in eine Arena. Dort stehend, findet man sich umschlossen von Julia Bünnagels Klangkompostion*, von den Fragmenten einer verfremdeten Marschmusik, von Grollen und Rauschen, dem Sound von Marschieren, der durch den Raum hallt. Denn durch diese Schallwände, die, anders als normale Lautsprecher, den Ton nicht in eine Richtung schicken sondern ihn in den gesamten Raum entlassen, kann dieser hier auf eine sehr intensive Weise seine letztlich auch manipulative Macht entfalten. Sound ist ein äußerst subtiles Machtinstrumentarium – wie auch Sprache, wie auch eine immer aufs Neue wiederholte Nachricht. Die Soundinstallation mit dem Titel RAW, auf Deutsch roh, ergibt rückwärts gelesen WAR. "

About:
Scottish sound artist and composer Jimmy Peggie uses microsound recordings, electronic fragments and atmospheres as a basis for  producing sparse, environmentally based, digital sound pieces.  

As an electronic sound artist his practice is not focused on music and the traditional use of harmony, melody or rhythm.  Rather, It’s more concerned with sound in all its forms and the way it can be used to convey emotion, and for artistic expression.   

His work uses cinematic sketches woven together to put the spotlight on what may be obvious but also what lies beneath the surface  -  a meditation on small details that are often hidden or lie unseen and unnoticed.   Low volume particles, silence, drones, and happy accidents feature on both a noticeable and also perhaps subliminal or subconscious level.

With an extensive background in rock, jazz and improvisation his current focus is sound composition, lofi electronics, sonic installations, field recording and interactive art.
