MadTech Records returns early November with ‘The Resistence’, a three-tracker coming courtesy of UK act Skapes. 
Alex Calver aka Skapes has been releasing a steady stream of his UK focused house and bass music over the past few years with projects such as Twocker alongside Low Steppa, Calvertron and also under his own name. Now though it’s his Skapes guise taking precedent and his project has seen him release on Mark Knight’s long running Toolroom and also Simma Black amongst many others. This time round though we see Skapes joining the roster of MadTech Records with some fresh new material. 
Stepping up first on the package is ‘Drop The Needle’ a high-octane slice of contemporary house led by vacillating subs and shuffled 909 drums alongside expansive synth swells and an amalgamation of vocal cuts. 
Title track ‘The Resistence’ follows and retains a similar bass fuelled aesthetic with rumbling low end, soft synth shots and 4/4 rhythms running with delayed bass hits and low-pitched vocal lines. ‘Bring It Back’ then rounds out the package, laying the focus on percussion this time via snare rolls, spiralling delayed vocal lines and Skapes’ signature snaking sub bass hook.

The latest DISPLAY split tape sees two exciting artists construct ice-cold ambience in a pair of sprawling cinematic pieces.

Laura Luna Castillo crafts a tense surrealist soundscape on “Things Have Started To Float”. The eerie and engaging piece steadily amasses and dissolves structure with a blend of droning mid-tones and creaking metallic hits all while a menacing bass pulse lurches forward. This distinct tension creates a cinematic feeling ultimately evoking a subtly whirling electronic mass frozen in time.

The flipside of the tape sees Lensk engaging in more structural experimentation on “Light (As It Shone Through Cracking Ice)”. The tundral composition slowly evolves from delicate ambient meditations and narrative glimmers to blistering wall-of-sound sonics. Closing with razor-sharp growls eventually fading back into more delicate, nocturnal hymns. A fitting final bow for the release.

The first DISPLAY split tape of 2020 finds Avbvrn and Evitceles taking a painterly approach to heavy-weight sonics.

Avbvrn’s “Austerity” skips through patchy urban environments while dark subterranean rhythms dance in and out of frame below. Occasionally focusing in on tight, micro synth murmurs before returning to eyes-down bass workouts, the piece gives an introspective look at the weight of a bustling outside environment.

On “White Lion”, Evitceles expands upon these cinematic themes but with a much wider lens. The pensive yet hulking epic finds orchestral pads dancing with hard hitting bass stabs, evoking the feeling of a monolithic structure finding life. A slow burner that ultimately culminates in other-worldly pastoral hymns, “White Lion” closes out the release in a cleansing fashion.
