I went for a quick visit to the Palupohja in the Alam Pedja reserve in Estonia, partly to meet up with friends and also to see the place again and maybe record a few late summer/early autumn sounds.  I didn't want to be laden-down with equipment for such a short visit, so I brought along only the MixPre3 recorder with a pair of Lewitt 440 microphones and a second recorder, the Tascam X8 with a tiny pair of mics, Primo EM272's.  I was delighted to meet up with fellow bird recordists Andrus Kannel and Veljo Runnel.  I was happy to see that Robert was still running the place and that we got to sit by the fire and talk about how the last few years had gone, what with covid etc.  Except for two recordings, all the other were made in the early mornings.  Out of five mornings, two were calm, one was slightly breezy, one was windy, so no recording on that morning and the last morning was the most beautiful and calm, but unfortunately someone started up noisy equipment in the area very early, so ruining any chance of recording anything.

Dream From Unexpected Nap

Eurasian cuckoo species of the genus Cuculus use quite a number of vocalisations. The best known are probably the male and female song - the latter often referred to as the ‘bubble call’.
The large number of vocalisations and variations suggest an equally large number of messages encoded in them.

The Pallas' Leaf Warbler is certainly one of the most beautiful leaf warblers of the Western Palearctic. Coveted in Europe as a rare and exceptional species during migration, few European people come into contact with its song. Yet its complex song is just as attractive and at the same time little studied.
In Asia, on the other hand, the bird is common and therefore receives much less attention. Here it is simply one species within the large variation of leaf warblers, which, in contrast to the European representatives, almost all have complex songs.

Dj Meld - Nature (Instrumental)

I was in Soomaa National Park recently.  I was there in 2012 and 2013, back then I had to stay outside the park and cycle in each day to record.  This time I was able to stay right in the park in an area that turned out to be the best place for recording.  Opposite to where I was staying was a fairly big area of short grass, I soon found that this is where Skylarks sang, three or even four birds as well as Lapwings.  This is also where I heard Jack Snipe for the first time, they sound very much like a galloping horse.  The weather was cold and a little breezy for the first few days, thankfully it settled down and became calm in the mornings so I could record.  I don't know why but even though the open area was big, maybe 20 acres, the birds kept to a small part of that, maybe one acre, this was really good as I believe it made them perform all the better.  I have hardly ever recorded Skylark much over my 42 years recording, so I decided to devote the rest of my stay to capturing the concert of Skylarks.  On my last day I noticed the birds were not singing as much and had moved away to an area nearby.  Looks like I had been in the right place at the right time.  I noticed that the best performances were in the really early mornings when it was still nearly dark.  I am delighted with the recordings.  Most mornings I set out three recording rigs, A Tascam DR100-Mk3 with the Rode NT4 with the Omni capsules, a Tascam X8 recorder with a pair of Lewitt 440's cardioid and finally a Sound devices MixPre3 recorder and a pair of Omni directional MKH8020's.  The field was saturated wet but gradually dried up somewhat.  If you hear a little crackle now and then, sounding like a vinyl record, it was probably made by air bubbles coming to the surface. A cabinetmaker by trade.  I have been recording birds for over 42 years.  Even as a seven year old I loved to hear the sound of birds. 
I believe that birdsong is a perfect reflection of the natural environment and yet a part of the experience of the environment.  
Over the years I have made some wildlife films and videos.  For wildlife recording I have been around Ireland, Wales, Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Belize, Guyana, Brazil, Peru and Costa Rica.
