This is one of my favorite places in the area where I record my Northern Europe ambiences. A rather small, almost square swamp with sparse pine and birch trees, in the middle of a forest. The place has fantastic acoustics with a beautiful distinct echo and diffuse tail due to the sparse trees. During my first of the 2 expeditions this spring I recorded a lot of crystally transparent night and early morning ambiences in this place, I had a chance even to catch the trumpeting flight calls of a swan flying over right above the swamp and then a chorus of swan calls forming an otherworldly drone, reminding a chorus of mermaids. 
Working now on converting all these treasures into publishable libraries. Here’s an example of an early morning 4 AM 4th of May recording with woodpeckers’ drumming communication and a cuckoo in this natural concert hall. In the second half some large bird makes some gentle snorting or moaning sounds CLOSEUP to the right side and then flies by with swishy wings flapping. Recorded with Nevaton MC50 Quad into Sound Devices MixPre 10 II, mixed to stereo for this example.
There were freezing temperatures at nights at this time, but this swamp, covered with fresh evergreen moss, emits a fantastic flower-like fragrance all year around. Also, I suddenly remembered for myself that the cover photo for our first library “Northern Europe Forest Meadow Ambiences. Summer” was taken right here in July of 2018.

These sounds were gathered by Vicki Powys during a three month recording and painting expedition to Northern Australia in the winter of 1990. This collection includes highlights such as the shrieks of the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo soaring overhead and the close calls of a lone Dingo which - at the time - was identified by internationally respected wildlife communities both in Australia and abroad, as the only known recording of such.

"I had recently bought a small four-wheel-drive car and a tent and had set off with a twofold purpose - to explore the landscape for painting and to record wildlife sounds. The sounds would later evoke the places every bit as much as my sketches and photographs. My recording gear was fairly basic, using a compact cassette (Sony WMD6C), with two ‘tie-pin’ microphones in a quasi-binaural setup for stereo sounds. Despite the limitations of the equipment, the sounds are still very evocative for me, of those times and places. The dingo that I recorded at Palm Valley (Finke Gorge National Park, Northern Territory) was later hailed by the British Library of Wildlife Sounds as ‘the only known recording of a lone dingo howling, in the wild’." Vicki Powys - Dingo

This is a long recording from a ridge near the ocean, so the surf is in the background, there is bird and animal activity at dusk and dawn, and a big thunderstorm rolls in.  The Yellow-Throated Toucan is very active, and the Scarlet Macaws, Tinamou, and Mantled Howler Monkeys are also calling at dusk. I removed one section of a few minutes where the rainfall was so heavy it started leaking through and hitting the mics but otherwise left this recording intact.  I used my Sennheiser Double MidSide system with a Sound Devices MixPre recorder.

Recorded very early morning on the banks of the Kavango River in Namibia. The recording includes hippopotamus, frogs, crickets, microbats and the occasional bird.

This spring has been extraordinary in Estonia. Very warm, even hot. Plants and insects are sometimes weeks ahead of their normal life cycle. 
During the last days of June green bushcrickets started to sing en masse. Usually I experience this kind of massive bushcricket chorus in the end of July.

The Pallas' Leaf Warbler is certainly one of the most beautiful leaf warblers of the Western Palearctic. Coveted in Europe as a rare and exceptional species during migration, few European people come into contact with its song. Yet its complex song is just as attractive and at the same time little studied.
In Asia, on the other hand, the bird is common and therefore receives much less attention. Here it is simply one species within the large variation of leaf warblers, which, in contrast to the European representatives, almost all have complex songs.
