So the weird thing is, the laptop recognizes the Flash drive in the "F12 Menu", but won't boot from it, even though I select it. It will just start Windows and show my login screen.Also, when I plug in a Win Installer on USB (Tried Win8), it is able to boot the installation menu without issues.(I also tried a Ubuntu14 bootable USB stick, but this didn't work neither. Even though, here it at least shows the common screen "Try Ubuntu"/ "Install Ubuntu", but then the screen stays black - won't do anything.)

i have been having these issues also. for day to day use i have no issue. when windows has a large update my drive starts disappearing in windows and the bios. i just did a fresh install of windows and i had to remove the wd drive as it was forcing my in a endless loop. it was just a storage drive but it was still making issues till i removed it.when windows forces restarts during updates the drive just disappears.


I would like a bit of assistance in determining the SSD size. Probably a 128GB may work, since program files (with the x86) plus windows folder is about 75GB. Except for price, is there any reason to go to 256 or 512GB over the 128?


Weird. But it's not unheard of that Windows update breaks something. I've had it knock out my sound card drivers in the past. But since windows driers are loaded later on it would be weird if they are the culprit. I'm just wondering if you used AiSuite to change some settings? Or did you have any other tool in place that would write to your BIOS from windows? That might care either written something incorrectly or corrupted something.


I was able to get out of the boot loop but selecting Last Known Good Configuration, which again took me to black with Cursor, but at least when booting up Normally now, it doesn't boot Loop (thanks LKGC)

Yesterday,I was using Blender's Eevee when this happened. The PC sees the boot device and when I select it the screen goes black for about 25 seconds at which point it just boots normally. I know the instructions say that when using "UEFI enabled PC to use Legacy Boot" but I want to boot through my normal UEFI settings. 
To prove my point I have a Paragon USB bootable stick created using their backup s/w that is based on WinPE and it boots my Win 10 w/no problem. I also have a Windows Recovery DVD that I can boot from on my Win 10 PC because again it is based on WinPE

3-I would like to know if there is any physical limit so that the most modern Logilink USB adapters do not work with +5TB disks (4 TB limit). And that these with the updated firmware have a limit smaller than 2.2 TB.

However doing it yourself is trivial, and I do recommend using Ghost, Acronis or CloneZilla (or any other free program) to take a image from that cleanly installed computer. Tape a bootable CD to the inside of their case (just for starting the restore program. Even a floppy disk with ghost.exe would do). Store the image either on a DVD (warning 4GB limit!) or on a small FAT partition on the harddisk. Do not mount that partition. If you use windows go to drive management and remove the assigned drive letter. That way you have a local backup, a big enough volume on which you can store it and a ready CD or pendrive to start the restore program.

Instead of using Ghost, you could use a FOSS alternative such as Clonezilla, g4l, a freeware backup application like the free version of Macrium Reflect, or something like Acronis - which while payware, is really easy, and comes with a bootable backup/restore disk. There's a huge load of applications that'll do what you want, if you're willing to look.


Even in this case, I wonder if ghost will find my hard disk partitions. Perhaps if I manage to make a bootable USB with some Win installation, that automatically allows the OS to recognize the HD partitions.


EDIT - PS: I found How can I run Ghost from a bootable USB key drive? . I tried the Hiren's way (as pointed out by ubiquibacon). It successfully booted and opened Ghost in the Win 8 PC. But in the Win 10 PC it started booting and expanding programs to the ramdrive R:, where it hangs.

I still use ghost myself, and have been in this same situation. I suggest using YUMI to create bootable Flashdrive, and download Hirens BCD or FalconFour BCD. From there boot into either. Tried hiren which works too, tried USB dos boot with modern drivers and got snow crash (kernel panicked). Using hot image technique is painless. I use grub4usb to make USB bootable.

Though I can easily create a bootable Windows 10 USB with Rufus, my goal is more educational: I want to understand what is going on, and what is the source of my failure, and if possible, to make it work.


Now, the above only works when the secondary bootloaders (i.e. the ones that comes from Windows and which Rufus doesn't modify) are designed to support
