Part 1
I don’t want to be a songwriter, songwriter no way
But I guess I don’t have a choice, it’s in my DNA

And I have to do clever things like find an non obvious rhyme for time

All you ever do is write songs and then you write more and more and more and more

Then I get this rabid urge in me, one I cannot resist 

So I guess that I’m a songwriter, it’s just as I feared - but
I don’t want to be a songwriter, songwriters are weird

Now no-one needs to be a songwriter. Cos that’s what AI is for (apparently)

Our folk ballad about the original and some believe only legitimate patron saint of England (St Edmund) coupled with a paean to the great Saxon Resistance freedom fighter Hereward the Wake. Hereward - whose defeated King Harold fought under an English flag bearing a white dragon on a red background - would almost certainly have recognised the valiant but martyred St Edmund (an Angle born in Germany but heir to the English throne) as his patron saint and definitely had no idea that a Syrian warrior Turk with a flag adopted by the Knights Templar on its way to becoming an icon of the far right and football hooliganism) would replace him. 

Born on Christmas Day 841 AD, Edmund succeeded to the throne of East Anglia in 856. He fought alongside King Alfred of Wessex against the "Great Heathen Army" of the Vikings through 869-70 when he was defeated and captured. He refused to renounce his faith and share power with the Vikings.
There is a famous statue of Edmund and the arrows on a roundabout in Bury St Edmunds.

Before we were Peacock's Tale, we used to sing in a rocking festival folk four piece called The Penland Phezants. (I played the Green Monk, pictured) Hereward is the history behind Robin Hood; several of the former's heroic exploits in the English Resistance to the Norman Conquest reappear in later famous Robin Hood folk ballads. The monks who chronicled Hereward told the truth as they saw it, including criticism of Hereward's moral lapses but freely admired his God-given qualities of courage, self-reliance and protection of the weak; the minstrels who celebrated Robin Hood's triumph of the little guy against the Norman barons were probably more interested a good story for tis own sake. But both the Hereward and Robin versions have more real (Saxon) history in them than many romances and even than most folk ballads. They are the newspaper stories and musical news of their day. We were touring the show in the pre-Covid Brexit period of 2017-18 and our innocent love and celebration of Merry England in the greenwood could no have been further than some of the toxic nationalism then prevailing.

A tale of the unfolding of mysterious events at a Cotswold valley spinning mill in the early twentieth century  - part of a series of songs from an imaginary Edwardian music hall.

A page from a trade directory - dated 1902 - included with this recording has a record of a spinning mill known as “Madame Ariadne’s” in the ancient wool town of Stark Choosing, Laucestershire. Whether this song and that mill are related is not recorded.
Also accompanying this recording is a handwritten note: “An account of a somewhat similar narrative is found in Q.R. Bunoni’s "Old Laucestershire Tales and Stories". In that story a spider takes over a flour mill, operating the body of the miller (which it had rendered unconscious) as a marionette to conceal its activities. Exactly what the spider hoped to gain by this subterfuge is unclear.”
