Every once in a while, I start with an idea with no clear vision of where the music should go. "The Red Forest" was definitely one of those tracks. I began with just a simple string texture and some somber double bass notes, but had zero clue where it would go or end up.

In the process of experimenting and trying out different ideas, a story started forming. It's like reading a book while writing it at the same time - that feeling of "I wonder where this will take me" as I try different things.  For me, that's what makes composing so exciting. I sometimes start somewhere, follow my instincts, and end up with something completely different from where I started.

Thanks to Zach Heyde for helping me figure out what to do with the percussion.

Tales from the North

W 1995 roku, po tragicznym trzęsieniu ziemi w japońskim Kobe, ratownicy przeszukiwali zawalone domy w poszukiwaniu ocalałych. Pod jednym z nich znaleźli kilkuletnią dziewczynkę - wyziębioną, ale żywą. Obok niej czuwał mały pies, który nie opuścił jej ani na chwilę. Nie szczekał, nie szukał pomocy. Po prostu leżał przy niej i czekał. To jego obecność zwróciła uwagę ratowników. Dzięki niemu dziecko zostało odnalezione. 

Ta historia stała się inspiracją dla tego utworu.

A Fallen Kingdom

W czasie dyktatury wojskowej w Argentynie, trwającej od 1976 do 1983  roku, tysiące ludzi znikało bez śladu - byli porywani, torturowani i  zabijani potajemnie przez reżim. Władze nie dawały żadnych odpowiedzi, a strach paraliżował całe społeczeństwo. Wśród tych, którzy zniknęli,  byli synowie i córki - młodzi, pełni życia, czasem wystarczyło, że  należeli do związku zawodowego albo wypowiedzieli się krytycznie. W  odpowiedzi na milczenie i okrucieństwo, w kwietniu 1977 roku, garstka matek zaczęła spotykać się w ciszy na Placu Majowym w Buenos Aires.  Nosiły białe chustki - symbol macierzyństwa i niewinności ich dzieci.  Ich marsz w kółko był jak modlitwa i krzyk zarazem - nie mieli broni,  tylko miłość i determinację. Reżim próbował je uciszyć, niektóre z nich zginęły, ale ich siła poruszyła sumienia całego świata. Po latach, gdy  dyktatura upadła, nie zniknęły - nadal walczą o prawdę, o imiona, o  godność zaginionych. Od 45 lat, w każdy czwartek, nadal spotykają się na Placu Majowym.

Ta historia zainspirowała mnie do stworzenia tego utworu.
