Since President Abraham Lincoln established observing the Thanksgiving Day holiday in 1863 to heal a fractured country amid the American Civil War (1861-1865). Consequentially, Americans for generations have believed in and centralized their national identity within several mythologies, including the propaganda surrounding the purported first thanksgiving between the Wampanoags and the pilgrims. 

Today on American Indian Airwaves, our guest from the Aquinnah Wampanoag nation joins us for the entire hour to discuss in-depth the origins of the Thanksgiving Day Holiday, the settler colonial perpetrators of violence and fabrication regarding this mythology that traces back to 1620s, the National Day of Mourning, the censorship of Frank “Wamsutta” Jame’s speech in 1970 for the 350th Anniversary of the Mayflower’s landing, who are the Wampanoag peoples along with their cultural and traditional practices, and more.

In addition, our guest worked for over 30 years in the Wampanoag Indigenous Program (WIP) of Plimoth Plantation, including 15 years as the WIP’s Associate Director; and worked 9 years at the Aquinnah Cultural Center. She is the recent author of the remarkable book: Colonization and the Wampanoag Story (2023)

The Eskimo Disc System and a Daughter's Search for her Grandmother," which investigates the little-known system of issuing numbered identity tags to Inuit in Canada between 1941 and 1978. She situates the disc system withing the broader process of colonization, detailing the impacts of this dehumanizing system on the health and well-being of Inuit and highlighting how the disc system contributed to intergenerational impacts on herself, her children, and her relationship with her community.

Voices from the field 35 – Kinauvit? What's your name? The Eskimo disc system

In this episode, Grade 12 student - Dani Taylor explores the Songhai Empire and the impact of European Colonization on its downfall. The Songhai Empire, flourishing in the western Sahel from the 15th to 16th centuries, was one of the largest empires in African history, succeeding Mali as the dominant power. Its strategic location along trans-Saharan trade routes, controlling gold and salt, fueled its wealth and cultural centers like Timbuktu and Gao. However, the rise of European maritime trade along the Atlantic coast in the late 15th century gradually diminished the importance of these overland routes, weakening Songhai's economic base. This decline, coupled with internal strife, made the empire vulnerable to external forces. In 1591, the Moroccan invasion, equipped with firearms, decisively defeated the Songhai army, leading to the empire's collapse and fragmentation, marking a significant turning point as European influence began to reshape West Africa.

Topic and Guests: David Vine contextualizes and provides updates of the Mauritius-UK agreement made in October 2024 and what it means for Chagossians who were forcibly removed from their Indian Ocean homeland of Chagos Islands by the U.K. to clear the area for a U.S. military base on Diego Garcia Island.  In early October 2024, the UK announced that it had come to an agreement with Mauritius and that the UK would hand back Chagos Islands to Mauritius.  But under the agreement the UK maintains control of Diego Garcia.  Also, the agreement is subject to a treaty by the parties involved.  David Vine is a writer, and political anthropologist and former professor of anthropology at American University.  David Vine is the author of the book Island of Shame: The Secret History of the U.S. Military Base on Diego Garcia.

Catherine Boland Erkkila is an architectural historian specializing in American cultural landscapes of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She previously worked as the managing editor of SAH Archipedia and taught at Rutgers University.

American Indian Airwaves is produced in Burntswamp Studios and started broadcasting on March 1st, 1973 on KPFK in order to give Indigenous peoples and their respective First Nations a voice about the continuous struggles against Settler Colonialism and imperialism by the occupying and settler societies often referred to as the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Latin and South America countries located therein.

American Indian Airwaves operates as an all-volunteer collective with no corporate sponsorship and no underwriters.

The National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH) is one of six National Collaborating Centres across the country, each focusing on a different area of public health, that were established in 2005 by the Government of Canada and funded through the Public Health Agency of Canada. 

The NCCIH supports a renewed public health system in Canada that is inclusive and respectful of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Through a holistic, co-ordinated and strengths-based approach to health, the NCCIH fosters links between evidence, knowledge, practice and policy while advancing self-determination and Indigenous knowledge in support of optimal health and well-being.
