Randall - Mutiny  - 2000

DJ Randall a.k.a Randall McNeill was one of the original East London House DJ‘s and subsequent world renown Jungle and Drum n Bass DJ‘s who very sadly passed away this year. ‘Can You Handle The Randall, a term used by Mc‘s when he would DJ. You knew you were going to hear the most serious of music when you heard him play. 

I first came across Randall's name when i was attending Stratford Secondary School which was based in Forest Gate in the mid to late 80s. Randall was a local Forest Gate boy and attended St Bonds, which was the school next to mine. He was a few years older but already a local name. 

in the late 80s...Randall would be a regular DJ at many of the local ‘do‘s‘, as we called them back then, such as Dungeons, Runtings, 1001 Base and many more. A week or day would not go past without turning the radio dial to pirate radio station Centreforce 88.3 and hearing Randall and the 3 Amgos. A trio of DJs he was part of alongside i believe Chris Energy, Chalkie White, and Corporation Dave, even though I may be wrong but thats my 1989 head :). He play the best of the house music alongside early U,K breakbeat house that went on to form Jungle, Ragga and Drum n Bass. Randall was a an instigator in all those music genres and key DJ producer in those scenes. 

Launching and running his De Underground record shop with fellow DJs Cool Hand Flex and Mike De Underground.

This live tape of DJ Randall playing at Metalheadz Sunday Session in 1996 was i believe recorded at the Leisure Lounge in Holborn. The tape has L.L on it. One of the few venues where Metalheadz hosted their nights as well as their legendary residency at The Blue Note in Hoxton Square as well as other locations such as the Paradise Club in Angel.

The tape was kindly given to me by Goldie, while i worked for Stussy Gimme 5 in the late 90s early 2000‘s. Goldie and a good few of the Metalheadz crew would come by to get Stussy clothing. Goldie having a very long relationship with the brand and someone i would see regularly while working there. So thanks to Goldie..its a great loss to the Drum n Bass music and the scene and to his family.

So enjoy this live session from an incredible time for the music the parties and a brief moment capturing Randall doing what his does best R.I.P.

A homage to drum&bass in the 90's and the mixes I used to record on tape (yes, TDK SA90 with 45 mins on each side). Cruzing around 162 bmp and heavily relying on releases from Good Looking, Moving Shadow, Ram Records and the mighty Metalheadz kru. Also in reminiscence of DJ Kemistry, DJ Randall, Marcus Intalex, Tango and the angelic voices of MC Conrad and Diane Charlemagne, RIP.

Strictly Rollers - a drum&bass retrospective 94-99

This is a special mix that brings together 14 tracks from 10 records, purchased during my last 2 trips to my local 2nd hand record shop, Out of Time Records. It is intended as a demonstration of the quality of music that they have available, and such shops should be patronised regularly as they continue to support the local music communities. 

As a DJ the search is always on for new and old releases that I don't have that will add that special something to my mixes. 

I've been a regular customer of Out of Time for years, as a teenager I would buy Metal CDs and Cassettes, then it became a treasure trove for D&B, Funk and Disco records.

70Five started spinnin’ vinyl on chancy belt-drive turntables in 1995. Back then it was all jungle and drum and bass, which was the staple for him for over more than a decade. While entering the new millennium 70Five got more into funk, disco, house, hip hop and bass music, evolving into his signature sound today. He has played with heavyweights like Krafty Kuts, A-Skillz, Featurecast, Jayl Funk, Chali 2na, The Funk Hunters and Stickybuds.

70Five is also one of the co-founders of Bang 'n Mash, the Amsterdam based party funk collective.

I have presented on Ipswich pirate Flex FM, as well as presenting on Ipswich Community Radio since 2000, and have interviewed Marcus Intalex, Klute, Bad Company, BCee and Mark & Clayton of TOV/Renegade Hardware.

Vincent became interested in mixing/DJing back in the 80s when he first heard a street sounds hip hop electro album and wondered how they managed to join the individual tracks up so seamlessly.

Having collected vinyl his whole life he bought a mixer in 1989 (no easy thing in Cornwall back then) and started trying to beat match on his father’s turntables.

Vincent got his own Technics 1210s mk2 in the early 90s and after some practice, he was soon playing house, hardcore and techno at parties across the Southwest under the name of DJ Cutting Edge.

Jungle and Drum and Bass seemed to be the next step. After listening to LTJ Bukem’s first essential mix in 1995 he really started to follow the Intelligent Drum and Bass sound.

Today, and now a DMC competitor and tutor, Vincent can be found playing Liquid and Liquid Funk tunes, delighting crowds across the Southwest with some nice a-men break business and sweet turntablism out of love for the old school. From time to time he can be found dropping a Jungle set somewhere in Cornwall as well performing at various House and Hip Hop events.
