I’m not trying to stir anything.
I’m trying to name what’s real.
Because I’ve sat with too many people wrecked by the things we refuse to talk about.
It’s not about being provocative.
It’s about being honest.
What happens when we keep silent?
When we see the carnage but ignore the cause?
When we have compassionate eye for the carnage but refuse to discuss the cause? 
That’s why I speak up.
That’s why I write.
That’s why I’m pushing hard
to get Hiding Behind God into the world.

Airat Khaziev, aka Şüräle, is a digital phantom, an echo of the Ural forests, distorted and half-forgotten. A sound artist, producer, and DJ based in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and originally from Bashkortostan, he crafts music that dissolves the boundaries between texture, rhythm, and noise, creating hybrid forms that hover between decay and rebirth.

Exploring a mythic auditory world, Şüräle drifts across a spectrum of sonic realms: from the mist of ambient soundscapes and the physicality of sculpted noise to fractured club mutations and tangled, chaotic rhythms.

Chris Washington reads Jane Austen differently from how she is classically understood; rather than the doyen of the cisheteronormative marriage plot, Washington argues that Austen leverages the generic restraints of the novel and envisions a nonbinary future that traverses the two-sex model of gender that supposedly solidifies in the eighteenth century. Here, Washington discusses a politics built on plurality and possibility with Marquis Bey, Christopher Breu, and Alison Sperling.



Chris Washington is associate professor of English at Francis Marion University. He is author of Nonbinary Jane Austen and editor of the Norton Critical Edition of Mary Shelley’s The Last Man.

Marquis Bey is professor of black studies and gender and sexuality and critical theory at Northwestern University. Bey is author of several books including Cistem Failure, Black Trans Feminism, and The Problem of the Negro as a Problem for Gender.

Christopher Breu is author of several books including In Defense of Sex, Insistence of the Material, Hard-Boiled Masculinities, and coeditor of Noir Affect. Breu is professor of English at Illinois State University. 

Alison Sperling is assistant professor of literature, media, and culture at Florida State University, and a visiting fellow at the Institute for Cultural Inquiry Berlin.

Home for Forrest Fang's stray tracks and miscellany.  Fang is an ambient progressive musician who emerged from the DIY-“cassette culture” 80′s scene with highly idiosyncratic style influenced by the minimalism of Steve Reich, Philip Glass and Terry Riley, the progressive rock of Jade Warrior and Mike Oldfield, and the traditional musics of non-Western cultures, including Javanese gamelan and the folk music of his Chinese ancestors. The rich electronic textures of his music are often complimented by Western and non-Western stringed instruments, winds and percussion, such as violin, Marxolin, gu-zheng (Chinese zither), Javanese metallophones and the Turkish lavta. Fang has released 13 albums over the past three decades, including two ambient soundscape recordings under the project name, “Sans Serif.” His music has been reviewed in Billboard, the Village Voice, The Wire, and Textura, and has been featured on nationally syndicated radio shows, “Echoes,” and “Music From The Hearts of Space.”
