After its world premiere at Cannes, where it won the festival's Best Screenplay prize, many have been anxiously awaiting to experience what is considered a new body horror classic and one of 2024's very best films. The film is an onslaught of maximalist filmmaking with grotesque imagery, impactful sound, and dramatically effective performances mixed with a satirical tone that pokes at our preconceived notions of beauty, aging, and self-image. "The Substance"

EXTREMELY SPOILERY! We’ve arrived upon the eve of Halloween and the penultimate episode of HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST. We previewed every day except today because today was left to Angela to decide which horror movie, made in 2024, was going to be discussed. There were many to choose from but we went to the movies and picked a body horror flick that is getting a lot of buzz right now. If your ear is to the ground then you already know we’re talking about Coralie Fargeat’s newest film “THE SUBSTANCE” and it stars a resurrected Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley & Dennis Quaid. Fargeat’s second feature film is visceral, alluring, relentless, disgusting and overstimulating. Obvious satirical commentary on body image, the scumbaggery of entertainment and fear of aging but where does this hyper tale end up? Would you take THE SUBSTANCE? I would. I’m too curious to not do something like that. Having a super hunky, gay other of myself walking around? He’d probably have a giant TikTok following within a week. He would serve mega cunt until I looked like that dude who drank the wrong goblet at the end of that Indiana Jones movie. Demi is back and Mr. Skin’s servers are gonna crash after this flick hits their radar. You should definitely bring any parents and in-laws with you to see this one. Happy Halloween!

Philip and Lara discuss 'The Substance' written and directed by French Filmmaker Coralie Fargeat. Fargeat and 'The Substance' won Best Screenplay at the festival, and the film has since received many accolades and has earned strong word-of-mouth buzz for its incisive storytelling and its iconic visual style. This sci-fi-infused horror film makes heavy use of practical makeup effects and vibrant production design, and won the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Demi Moore stars as Elisabeth Sparkle, an actress and TV personality who is ending her career has an exercise show host. Devastated by the prospect of aging out of a life of being celebrated for her physical appearance, Elisabeth turns to an experimental "substance" that purports to alleviate some of the difficult aspects of aging. This has a highly disruptive effect on Elisabeth's life, but the lure proves too difficult to resist, and the substance takes hold with the potential for innumerable unforeseen consequences. 220: Kino des Anthropo-was?

"Sovereign" had its world premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Festival, where it received positive reviews for its performances from Nick Offerman, Jacob Tremblay, and Dennis Quaid, as well as Christian Swegal's writing and direction. Based on real events, the story follows a father and son (Offerman and Tremblay) who identify as Sovereign Citizens, a group of anti-government extremists, as they venture across the country and find themselves in a standoff with a chief of police (Dennis Quaid) that sets off an intense manhunt with tragic consequences. Making his feature directorial debut, Swegal was kind enough to speak with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below.
