406. Friendship Panic - CHIP 'N DALE RESCUE RANGERS (2022)

Philip and Alexandria review the new Disney live-action remake 'Lilo & Stitch,' a summer 2025 smash hit at the box office directed by Dean Fleischer Camp. Lilo and her older sister and guardian, Nani, find themselves in a precarious position as Nani struggles to raise the temperamental Lilo on her own following the offscreen death of their parents. On a distant planet, the alien weapons scientist Jumba is being held on trial for unethical experiments. His latest experiment, 626, is a superpowered six-legged furry alien who escapes aboard a spaceship on a course to Earth. Experiment 626 poses as a dog an an animal shelter on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. He is then adopted by Lilo and named Stitch. Stitch introduces various elements of chaos into Lilo and Nani's lives, and the fragile family must weather threats both domestic and extraterrestrial. Lilo & Stitch (2025)

Audacious, trailblazer stories need enterprising visionaries to tell them. This tie between compelling film and skillful director seamlessly weave together in the novel, five-part, Disney+ docuseries, “Harlem Ice.” Harlem Ice is the delightfully inspiring, feel-good film chronicling the lives of a bevy of black and brown teen girl ice skaters of the “Figure Skating in Harlem” organization. Brooklyn-based documentarian SAMANTHA KNOWLES is the young, African American, award winning, filmmaker phenom appointed to craft this first-of-its-kind adventure. 

The Sidebar by NYABJ's SONJA D. GRACY talks with Knowles, a DOC NYC 40 Under 40 List 2023 and “NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Directing in A Documentary Series" recipient, about her work on the Harlem Ice film co-produced by Oscar-winning film director Ron Howard and ABC TV broadcaster Robin Roberts. In this podcast, Knowles shares her vision for the docuseries' creative arc that propels the figure skating organization’s ice access beginnings to its ice-skater mentorships of others across the globe. Knowles also divulges why she squarely centers her art on profiling the plight and progress of African Americans.

In 2005, Disney was in the midst of its direct-to-VHS era, a time when nearly every animated franchise received a sequel—some even spawning trilogies with two follow-ups. Among this wave of releases, Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch stands out as a shining gem, according to The Film Buff. However, this doesn’t mean he’s finished exploring this era of oft-maligned films or the Lilo & Stitch franchise itself.

10 years ago Rogue One was released to theatres and created strongly divided opinions between the Fan and the Critic. More recently, Andor season 2 was released and was received well by both. Perhaps it is time to revisit Rogue One and see if the passage of time yields a more favourable response. Will the Critic walk back his hatred? Will the Fan be less hyped?

Lara and Philip revisit the original 'Lilo & Stitch' from 2002. This was the feature animation debut for both directors, Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, who would team up again on DreamWorks' 'How to Train Your Dragon' (2010). Chris Sanders had originally conceived the Stitch character in 1985, and he has gone on to voice the character in numerous appearances, beginning with the famous "Inter-Stich-als" promotional campaign for this film. He would later reprise the role for the 2025 live-action adaptation, directed by Dean Fleisher Camp. The story followed an escaped alien genetics experiment who crash lands in Hawaii. He poses as a dog and is adopted by recently orphaned sisters Lilo and Nani, but their difficult life seems to only take a turn for the worse with the addition of this new family member. Jodi, Lara, and Philip discuss the live action Disney remake 'Snow White' from 2025. Directed by Marc Webb and starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, this retelling expands the story to encompass Snow White's relationship with her parents, having been born during a snowstorm and later suffering the loss of her mother as a child. Gal Gadot's Evil Queen uses her sorcery to enchant the king and amass her power as queen. Thought to be absent on a military campaign, the king is unable to prevent the Evil Queen from inflicting her cruelty upon Snow White and the citizenry. Snow White eventually escapes and finds herself in the company of the forest-dwelling dwarfs, where she also meets up with a band of rebels loyal to the king. Can they aid Snow White in her attempt to find her father and thwart the treacherous Evil Queen?
