Brielle Cotterman survived attempted murder, intimate partner domestic abuse and emotional abuse. We’re talking with her about why survivors are still not getting the empathy and understanding they deserve, why leaving an abuser is not as easy as we think, and the misconceptions about domestic abuse. “When Help Never Came” is based on real events from my life. Between 2017 and 2021, I collapsed repeatedly from heart issues and undiagnosed medical conditions. Each time, I begged for help—and each time, that person walked away. She told everyone I was faking it, even as I lay on the floor barely able to breathe.

It wasn’t until years later, with someone new by my side, that paramedics finally captured my AFib in real time. The woman I’m with now called 911 the moment I went down—something the person I lived with for over a decade never once did.

This song is about that betrayal. It's about being gaslit while your body fails. It's about being dragged through a frivolous fight while someone denies you're disabled just to obtain more money. But most of all, it’s about surviving it.

If you've ever had to prove your pain was real to someone who should have known better, I hope this song speaks for you like it did for me.
