Guidione Machava has a confession: he's tired of being called an "African designer." The Mozambican product designer, now based in France and fresh from stints at Shopify and Paris-based 23point5, reckons that geographic qualifiers automatically strip away a third of your professional value before you've even started.

It's a provocative stance from someone who's built his career bridging African markets and global tech giants. Since launching- MozDevz - Mozambique's largest developer community - over a decade ago, Machava has been methodically executing what he calls his "Maria Sharapova strategy": a systematic approach to becoming world-class that he lifted from a Tim Ferriss podcast.

From building communities across six African countries to creating a business directory that attracted 300,000 SMEs, to founding Kabum Digital (Mozambique's leading tech publication), Machava has consistently punched above his weight class. His secret? "Piggybacking" on successful people and refusing to let his environment dictate his ambitions.

Unlike software, physical products offer no "rollback to previous version" option.

- On manufactured serendipity: Rather than waiting for opportunities, Machava systematically identified people in positions he wanted to occupy, then found ways to provide value to them. The approach landed him interviews with executives from IDEO, Google, and Facebook for his World Class Designer podcast.

Abstract: To gain additional value from their digital platforms, some companies open them to external developers via APIs, thereby creating external developer platforms (ExDPs). Many companies struggle to monetize ExDPs, though. This briefing compares two distinct approaches to monetizing ExDPs: build-on, in which external developers create complementary solutions on top of the company’s platform; and build-in, in which external developers integrate capabilities  from the company’s platform into their own freestanding applications, often combined with data from other companies’ ExDPs. Using case studies of Salesforce and Schneider Electric, this briefing explores the distinct value, requirements, and outcomes of each approach to guide companies in selecting their ExDP monetization strategy.

Wadala, a refugee man faces serious fuel shortage for cooking in his family. He decides to go early at dawn to cut trees as firewood, just outside Imvepi refugee settlement. 

A refugee woman Ms. Awate wakes up from sleep and hears a sound of axe in the nearby forest. She decides to find out. Upon arrival, she notices that her immediate neighbor Mr. Wadala, is cutting down a big tree to get firewood and burn into charcoal as fuel for his family. Ms. Awate advises Wadala to not cut down big trees but that he should focus on small branches if he is badly off.

A climate expert warns community members against cutting down big trees, stressing that big trees attracts rainfall, protects the environment from strong winds, prevents drought, and regulates greenhouse gases.

It’s a Good Start of Nothing takes its name from a dyslexic twist on “a good start of something” a slip that unexpectedly revealed something more fitting. Centered around swirling sonic elements and grounded by a low bass, it explores how complexity can emerge from apparent randomness. Like the title itself, it embraces the unknown, suggesting that beginnings don’t always need definitions and the act of making doesn’t need a clear end. Sometimes, not knowing is part of the shape. It is necessary to the process. And maybe, in the end, this is nothing. And that’s ok.

Yoann Pisterman is a French sound artist and composer based in Berlin. Originally trained in visual arts, his practice began with drawn landscapes blending architecture and vegetation. Sound emerged in response and gradually became the core of his work. He describes it as “painting with sound.” 

His compositions move between ambient, kraut, electroacoustic, and experimental forms; balancing softness with density, surface with depth. A kind of childlike topography for deep listeners: light yet intricate, subtly shifting perception and sculpting space. the end, this is nothing. And that’s okay.
