It’s been 600 days since my last song; Yelema Riddim. Since then, I’ve overthought almost every form of original music I was making. Nothing sounded good enough, authentic enough or in line with who I aim to be as an artist.

In this period I felt like I needed to create a barrier between my club music and the music I make with the intention to just be stuff you’d like to listen to at any given moment of the day. It’s almost ironic because this way of thinking is the opposite how I am as a DJ. Perfectionism took over 90% of the time which made music making so much harder and less fun.

For the first time since I started making music I felt pressure and anxiety going forward. In a way I might’ve directed that energy towards the 6 edits I released in this period of time, including the Sade, Cleo Sol & Kendrick one. Making those felt more natural in a weird way. This period was all about healing and I’ve done just that. 🙂‍↕️

So now is the time to let go of the music I’ve been making for the past 1,5 years! We’re starting off with my new record: “Tree’s Root”. This one breathes summer and warmth. I hope you enjoy it as much as I loved making it.

This track is dedicated to all of the sewer monkey rats I have dealt with over the past year who have adamantly tried to suck the life out of me. While they come in many different shapes, sizes, colors, and backgrounds, the one thing they all have in common is that they are dumb. 🔴 
They are dumb because they think I don't see them, but their clown shoes squeak loudly as they try to scurry by. 🤡
They thought they could break me, but actually only ended up breaking themselves more in the process. 
You can watch everything I do, you can throw dirt on my name, you can copy, you can try to sabotage. 
But remember, only the truth has legs. 
The day you accept yours is the day you will be free. ✨ 

This is a real note I made and gave to someone in an envelope; it felt fitting to choose as the cover image. It will soon be available on a t-shirt. 🧵

This mix I channeled my anger and allowed myself to explore this theme musically. 
What is the sound of anger? Is it rock? Is it rap? Is it drum & bass? Is is jazz? All genres born out of rebellion. Is anger quiet or is it loud?  I asked myself many of these questions and found many answers. 💡
I’m taking you around the world (as I do), we go to Nigeria in the 70s with Fela Kuti, to Lil Kim in 1996 rapping to her haters, to 2006 in London with Lily Allen's smile, to 2022 with Beyonce singing about transmutation and being cozy with who she is. 🐝

This song began more than a year ago, when Josh created a song out of a looper beat with his four string fretless bass. It sat on the shelf until a few weeks ago, when he shared it with JJ, who was in creative mode one Saturday evening. Josh had actually forgotten that he'd added a bass line to it, and thought he was just passing on a looper beat for JJ to play with. 
  However, JJ heard it, and was so excited that added his magical electric piano part, making it sound like a real song, instead of just drums and a bass. Ken also heard some magic in here, because he came up with his own brilliant beat to replace the looper that was used in for the seed. Mark was next to throw in, adding the striking drum pattern breakdown, and the thrilling flute solo, as well. Tez came in shortly after, adding his thrilling guitar to the mix. After everyone had added their parts, Josh came back and added two guitar parts, the simple low end line, as well as the high strumed triads. At this stage, Mark did some editing, as it is in his skill set, and made it less dense and easier to listen to. 
  Now that the song was musically complete, out newest member, Carl, dropped the amazing vocals you hear, singing his original lyrics. After Carl was done sprinkling his magic in it, we needed an able producer to bring out the magic of the recordings. Good thing we have a trained producer to do the job in Stephen, who mixed and mastered it superbly, as always. 
  This is Eclectic Collective's first fore into the afrobeat genre, although a few of us are really big fans already, and Josh has a few other originals in this genre buried on his page, as well. As always, we all enjoyed the process of hearing this one come together. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.

MENTAL FREEDOM NOW [INSTRUMENTAL]

Time Dey Go marks the debut release of L¥O, reimagining one of Africa’s most powerful protest anthems: Sorrow, Tears & Blood by Fela Kuti.

Originally written after the 1976 Soweto Uprising, Fela’s anthem stood against apartheid oppression. Today, L¥O brings that spirit into the 21st century — layering Fela’s defiant voice with hypnotic rhythms, breakbeat grooves, and cinematic piano. The result is both a respectful tribute and a bold, modern reimagining — a dialogue between past and present.

Time Dey Go is a call to remembrance and resilience, keeping alive Fela’s timeless message against injustice while reshaping it for global dancefloors.

Welcome to my page, my peers, associates, friends, and musical family. I'm a lifelong, multi-instrumentalist musician who records prolifically and joyfully. You'll hear me play guitar, bass (regular four string, and four and five string fretless), mandolin, banjo, keys (piano, organ, synth), lap slide, sitar, and sing on my recordings here. I've been in a few dozen bands in my life, playing everything from bluegrass, jazz, rock, jam band, reggae, funk, afrobeat, Middle Eastern, traditional Irish, singer/songwriter, pop/covers, to experimental/avant garde. 
  Since I found SoundCloud a couple years ago, I've found many talented, creative people with whom to create music. However, in the summer of '23 I formed a band called The Eclectic Collective with some of my favorite musicians I've met through here. It started as a loose collective of musicians and coalesced into a core group of musicians who find other musicians with whom we'd like to make music, then run their songs through our process, and in effect add a full band. That core of The Eclectic Collective includes Tez (Llanpsych), J.J. Terrel, Ken (K2 and the Three), Stephen (Texmex Shaman), Chris (cgmaness), and Mark (mistermark). A couple of other musicians are frequent collaborators, as well, including Artur of Surfers Like Us, and Steve Vervaet of Steve's World. More recently, we've been joined by Carl of The Beautiful Dark fame. 
  The magic of music is amplified exponentially by each person adding to it. So, we really try to add our sorcery all kinds of music from all kinds of artists. Sometimes, we keep it within the group, but a lot of what we do is collaboration with other artists. Therefore these days, 100% of what I do is collaboration, within the group or with other artists on the side.
  I, and we, are also available for hire if you have a song or lyrics and you really want to add bigger instrumentation or a band and good production to it.

 I'm overjoyed to have found my community on SoundCloud. This is a truly unique forum where everyone is sincerely trying to build each other up. The profoundly supportive and positive SoundCloud community has really opened up an exciting new world of collaboration for me. That is the main reason I'm in the Cloud, actually, to connect with other musicians and make music that I enjoy listening to, and hopefully others do, as well. I am ALWAYS looking to collaborate with interesting musicians, mostly though BandLab, which is where I record almost exclusively. It's a solid, free digital audio workstation hub where you can share recording projects, even if it's not where you make your recordings.
  Everything I do is live instrumental, not programmed, and using no computer beyond my phone. That's not to say that I would be opposed to using that kind of tool, it's just not my preferred medium with which to paint. If you like my music, please share it. Proficient performer of piano, bass guitar, double bass, cello, 6 string , 12 string , drums, triangle (shall I include tambourine too?🤣), vocals, lyrics. 99% of the tracks on this page are original songs. None of my performances on any of my tracks, whether solo work, or collaboration, have any editing whatsoever. Effects and equalization? Of course! But no editing, no software, etc. Quite a substantial amount of these tracks are with The Eclectic Collective. We are like family and have been playing together on a daily basis since approximately March of 2022 as the Eclectic Collective. Before the band bore it's name Eclectic Collective; Josh, Ken, Stephen, Tez, and  CG Maness were doing some occasional collabs. At any given time we are all simultaneously working on about 15 different songs. And when we feel they are done cooking in the oven we release them. Singer-songwriter, arranger and producer from Togo, Yao Olagbedji, musically affirms his filiation to the legends, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti and Miles Davis. They subtly inspire his music, but also his messages. Always with in the background, a desire for independence to promote an original sound and a message that resonates with an Africa in full boiling, as an echo of his first album "Alerte en Afrique" produced in the early 2000s. This production is powered by the African Syndicate Band.
