A spatial narrative from blocks of textural sounds telling the tale of the modern man and the sea, with neo-classical choir flashes serving as the only rays of light.

Initially, I considered titling this “Tools,” since the concept was to create both the music and the album cover purely using pre-existing tools in Logic Pro and Canva—an expression of creativity in the modern age (I also thought about taking a “Lateralus”-like approach—because, well… Tools).

But as the process unfolded, the album cover itself seemed to call for Xenakis. So, I sampled “Syrmos (1959),” layering it as an effect over the beat.

This led to an architectural yet chaotic permutation—where structured repetition justifies the blending of sounds that aren’t traditionally “functional.” Inspired by Xenakis, I played with the idea of “flux per area,” which can be reversed, like a “measure per flux.” (Also paying tribute to the Fluxus art movement).

Then came the blues guitar riff over the circle of fifths—a shift inspired by Bach’s Cantatas (e.g., Nos. 140 & 147) where the introduction of a second melody radically transforms the mood.

Also I write this in retrospect. I wasn’t thinking too much in the process—just following the flow.

当初、この作品のタイトルは 「Tools」にしようと考えていた。Logic Pro と Canva の、既存のツールのみを使って楽曲とアルバムカバーを制作するというコンセプトであり、現代の創造性を象徴する試みでもあった（また、Lateralus のようなアプローチを取ることも考えた——なぜなら…Tools だから）。

しかし、制作が進むにつれ、アルバムカバーそのものが「クセナキスの音を加えろ」と語りかけてくるように感じた。そこで、「Syrmos (1959)」 をサンプリングし、ビートにエフェクトとして重ねた。

その結果、生まれたのは建築的でありながら混沌とした変奏。反復が、「機能性」を持たない音の融合を正当化する。クセナキスの音楽に活用されている「フラックス・パー・エリア」という概念を探求し、それを逆転させた「メジャー・パー・フラックス」という発想にも行き着いた。（また、フルクサス運動へのオマージュも込めている。）

さらに、ブルースギターのリフを五度圏のサイクルの上に乗せた。これは、バッハのカンタータ（例：No.140 & No.147）に着想を得たもので、新たな旋律の導入によって楽曲のムードが劇的に変化するという手法を取り入れている。

と、振り返りながら書いています。制作過程の瞬間瞬間は流れに身を任せていただけだった。


Per Flux

Segunda Iteración de "Todas las notas largas de mi Instrumento" (2024), una pieza interactiva de carácter improvisatorio para el ensamble de cualquier número y tipo de instrumentos. En ella los músicos tocan en cualquier orden y de la forma mas larga posible, cada nota (o un grupo de notas) de cualquier forma que le permita su instrumento, escuchando e interactuando apaciblemente con el resto del ensamble.

Busca con ella insertar la improvisación como tecnología social para la cohesión en grupos de músicos, desarrollar sistemas musicales interactivos no digitales, y ofrecer una experiencia audible satisfactoria para el escucha y el instrumentista.

Gracias a Rogeiro Llamas por el acompañamiento de la idea, a Juan S. Lach por la revisión de la pieza, a Edgar Beltrán por la edición del texto-partitura, a Liliana Rodriguez, Rogeiro Llamas, David Ethan y Carmen Maldonado por darle vida a esta versión, a Ver Ireta por el diseño de la portada y a Alejandro A. Social Discipline is incredibly excited to present the adventurous life of Jeff Perkins, a hidden gem of the American underground.

This massive five-hour podcast, recorded in Berlin in June 2024, explores his fascinating journey—no one else can claim to have performed for Yoko Ono and John Cage, created legendary light shows with The Velvet Underground, Sly and the Family Stone, and The Germs, programmed the first Kenneth Anger retrospective in L.A., and encountered both Charles Manson and members of the satanic cult The Process.

Jeff joined the military in the 1960s and was stationed in Tokyo, where he met Yoko Ono in the early ’60s. He began performing some of her pieces there and later in New York. Perkins also filmed Ono’s classic Film No. 4 (Bottoms), a Fluxus work. His first independent contribution to the Fluxfilm Anthology was Shout. He was at the heart of the 1960s New York avant-garde scene, surrounded by figures like La Monte Young, Jack Smith, and Angus MacLise.

In January 1967, Perkins moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a programmer at Cinematheque 16. Influenced by Tony Conrad’s The Flicker, he began producing powerful light shows and collaborated with bands throughout the ’60s and ’70s—ranging from The Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Grateful Dead to the punk scene with X and The Germs. He even refused to do a show for the Sex Pistols due to a disagreement with the promoter. Perkins was a close friend of Terry Jennings and, in fact, entrusted his archive to La Monte Young. While in L.A., he was neighbors with the artist James Turrell.

In 1980, Perkins moved back to New York and started a loft project just a block away from Ground Zero, reminiscent of George Maciunas’ artist loft spaces. To finance it, he worked as a cab driver. He remained deeply connected to cinema, particularly through Anthology Film Archives, where he proposed a John Cassavetes retrospective to Jonas Mekas and later became a manager. In 1994, Nam June Paik—who coined the term “The Fluxus cab driver” for Perkins—invited him to perform at Anthology Film Archives in a homage to Yoko Ono. His performance, Butthead, was a great success. His legendary loft became a hub where one could easily encounter visiting filmmakers like Pedro Costa and Albert Serra.

In 1989, Perkins organized a series of lectures at Anthology Film Archives with Henry Flynt and Tony Conrad, reuniting the two after years of estrangement. Flynt would become a lifelong friend. In 2008, during the financial crisis, when I lived with Jeff, we organized a series of four-hour lectures by Flynt in the loft’s kitchen, focusing on the crisis and communist economics. I vividly remember Tony Conrad attending one of them in his elegant pajamas.

Perkins has directed two critically acclaimed films—one on abstract painter Sam Francis and another on the legendary Fluxus figure George Maciunas. He is currently finishing editing a film about Henry Flynt in Berlin.

This podcast concludes with an excerpt from his piece Movies for the Blind, which features recordings of conversations with passengers from his time as a New York cab driver.

The experimental double-sided 10-inch vinyl ‘Two Intersecting Loops of Silence’ turns silence into rhythm and time into matter. A work that transforms the familiar vinyl record from a traditional sound carrier into an instrumental sculpture that quite literally puts time into rotation.

Side A features two silent locked grooves, each centred around one of two holes: one central, one off-centre. When played from either hole, the grooves intersect and produce a merely mechanical ticking sound, echoing the passing of seconds. No sound was recorded; but emerges only through the record’s spinning. Over time, as the grooves wear and scratch, the rhythm changes.

Side B reimagines the record as an image carrier. Instead of audio, Mater etched a drawing directly into the copper layer of a DMM master plate, turning a clock-like image into an analogue tactile imprint. When played, the record’s rotation animates this clock drawing, however not arms, but faces turn.

The making of this record was equally experimental as its concept. Every technical step fell outside conventional vinyl production standards: two centre holes, intersecting and off-center silent grooves, etching on DMM plates and pressing without labels. It took over five years, countless tests and conversations with mastering engineers and pressing plants across Europe before finding partners willing to realise this work.

‘Two Intersecting Loops of Silence’ is a study of time, sound, and perception, combining conceptual philosophy with material experimentation. An inquiry into what it means to “record” time, and how time manifests through physical motion.

The numbered edition of 200 copies is released by Futura Resistenza, a label operating between performance, music, and visual art. Each cover is hand-printed using three different test etching plates, turning every copy into a unique artwork.
