My Testimony: The Gift of One More Year – A Story of Love, Loss, and Surrender

There are moments in life that become etched into your soul forever — moments when heaven breaks into earth, and you know, without a doubt, that God hears you.

I was just a child when my world was shaken. My father — my hero, my protector, my teacher — fell seriously ill and was taken to the hospital. I didn’t fully understand everything at that age, but I knew something was wrong. Deep down, in the quiet places of my heart, I felt a divine whisper. God was speaking. He gently told me that my father’s time was nearing an end.

With a faith only a child could carry, I ran to the only One who could help — God Himself. I fell on my knees, lifted my voice in a way only desperation and love can produce, and I made a request that would shape the course of my life.

I asked God for one more year.

Just 365 more days with my father. One more year to laugh with him. To learn from him. To feel the strength of his love and the warmth of his presence.

And God — in His incredible mercy and kindness — answered.

Not long after, the doctors came in with a look of confusion and awe. “A miracle has happened,” they said. My father was suddenly, unexplainably well. The sickness that once threatened his life reversed. Hope returned. Joy returned. And for one full year — not a day less, not a day more — I had him.

365 days. Exactly what I had asked of the Lord.

Every moment during that year became a sacred gift. We laughed. We cried. We celebrated birthdays, shared meals, and made memories. I soaked in his words, his stories, his hugs. It was as though God had placed a seal over time — a divine pause — just for us.

And then, just as quietly as the miracle began, the time came for him to go home.

But something had shifted in me forever.

I had seen the faithfulness of God.
I had experienced His voice.
I had felt the power of answered prayer.
And I had tasted the depths of His love, even in sorrow.

That was the moment I surrendered my journey to God.

I realized that I was never alone, even in grief. That the God who gives, the God who heals, and the God who speaks — He was the same God calling me into a life of deeper trust, of destiny, and of purpose.

Since that day, my journey has been marked by the same God who gave me that year. The same God who heard the cry of a little boy and answered with divine precision. My heart belongs to Him — not because of what He gave, but because of who He is.

I know now that nothing in life is wasted. Not the tears. Not the pain. Not even death. Everything is held in the hands of a God who writes stories with glory in every chapter — even the ones that break us.

I am who I am today because of that year.
Because of that prayer.
Because of that surrender.

And I will forever carry the legacy of my father — and the fingerprints of God — as I walk forward into the calling He placed over my life.

#The Cycle of Hurt

A — Polished first-person testimony (blog/short memoir)

It began as a very dark night — everything in my life felt like it was coming apart. I started drinking more than I ever had. Somebody hurt me deeper than anyone had before. For a moment I saw the woman of my dreams, true love right in front of me — and in an instant it was ripped away. I lost myself in that one moment.

One thing led to another until the past exploded back into my present. I fell into a place my worst nightmares could only hold and was pulled into a cold, toxic place I couldn’t escape. I woke up in a hospital with five men holding me down, trying to strap me to a table. I was in my underwear, losing my mind as memories I’d buried came rushing back. I’d blocked that time of my life for years, but there it was, vivid and cruel.

Chained to the bed, I still told them everything — what happened, why it happened. Most of those men were musicians; they even gave me their numbers. I began to talk about my journey with God and how I wanted musicians who were as hurt as I was — people who’d been broken and needed Jesus. Everywhere I went I found hurt souls that needed help, and I wanted to be that man for them.

The watch on the bed was relentless. I had to endure being watched in the most humbling, dehumanizing ways — even having someone watch me use the restroom — for days. Fourteen days of hell. Three days before they finally released me from the chains; still, I couldn’t leave the room or see visitors. I was terrified of hospitals — even once when I was fighting kidney stones I didn’t want to go. I couldn’t stand being around people because I felt their emotions so deeply; mirror-touch made everything worse. I’d attach to others’ feelings until I was overwhelmed.

It felt like a lock, a block — maybe even a lie to keep me from getting well. But through all of it I had to check the things I’d been told I couldn’t do. I had to reinvestigate the words that said “you can’t” and transform them into reasons I could. Fourteen days of hell — and fourteen days that revealed something beautiful and resolute from God. Now I’m home.

Times that I thought I was going to lose it, you know, go crazy
But somehow God held me in a place that I could get help
Find somebody that was going to understand my
Need, my desire

My name is John. I have been a broadcaster for five years and have been writing music and poetry for twenty years. I didn’t even realize I could read and write until I discovered I have mirror-touch synesthesia. I perceive everything from right to left: my poetry, words, and compassion. Dudley Anderson was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. After graduating from Bible College in 1990, God opened the way for Dudley to branch out into Christian radio. As a musician and worship leader he developed a heart for Christian music, which became the main thrust of his radio work in South Africa.

Most of my music centers on Jesus Christ and God’s amazing grace. I primarily write in the Country Christian style, but every now and then I like to branch out when the mood strikes. You might hear touches of alternative Christian rock (I did grow up in the ’60s and ’70s), contemporary gospel, or even a hint of bluegrass gospel along the way. From time to time, I also step outside faith-based music into modern bluegrass or country.

One of my current projects is an album inspired by poems I wrote to my wife while she was deployed during Desert Storm in 1991. After all these years, I’m finally adapting them into songs — a project that’s been close to my heart for decades.

I was fortunate to play bass and sometimes piano in my late teens and early twenties for a country gospel group known as The Gospel Crusaders. We performed primarily at churches across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Then life happened, and I stepped away from performing for almost 50 years. During this time, I started focusing more on writing lyrics and music. In 2017, I picked up my mandolin and joined God’s Country in Largo, Florida. The group disbanded in 2023 when several members moved out of state, but we’re planning a reunion performance in 2026.

Even when I venture beyond my main focus of sharing the gospel through song, I strive to keep my lyrics honest, heartfelt, and sometimes just plain fun. Believe it or not, I’m not in this to make money — I write as an outlet to share the stories and experiences of life over the past 70 years. I write the lyrics for most of my songs, though I’ve been blessed to collaborate with a few talented friends along the way.

I use Studio One to produce my music and have built a large library of loops over the years. Some vocals are mine; others are performed by friends. And yes, I also use AI-generated voices or enhancements to vocals when needed.  I am in my 7th decade on earth and my voice doesn’t have the range it once had, plus I don’t have immediate access to female vocalists.  There’s a lot of debate about AI in music, but for me, the goal has never changed — to spread God’s love and joy. Technology is simply a tool, much like the studio innovations that have shaped music for the past fifty years.

In today’s music, many well-known and touring artists now use pre-recorded tracks and digital stems during live concerts to fill out harmonies, recreate orchestral parts, or trigger sound effects — it’s all part of modern performance. Whether it’s a backing track on stage or an AI vocal line in the studio, the heart behind the music still matters most.

I don’t believe AI will ever replace real musicians, but those who learn to embrace it and use it to enhance their craft will continue to flourish in the music industry.

I play bass, trumpet, guitar, piano, mandolin, and I’m currently working to get up to speed on the fiddle. You may not agree with my take on AI, and that’s okay. My purpose isn’t profit — it’s to share the message of God’s love through whatever tools I have, whether that’s a guitar, a loop, or an algorithm that helps me clean up a mix.

As W. Edwards Deming once said,
“It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory.”

Technology will keep evolving, and so will we. My greatest hope is that one of these songs touches someone’s heart or makes a difference in their life. If God can use even one of them to do that, then I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.
