This is my audio project, The Mighty Hummingbird, created for my SFSU audio journalism class with Professor Josh Davis. The assignment was to produce a segment for KQED, which will be airing next month (September 2024). My audio partner, Johnny C., handled the research and conducted the primary interviews, while I was responsible for all the audio mixing, editing, and script structure. I mainly use logic pro x, protools, and a little bit of adobe audition as well.

I am humbled to co-create once again with my dear friend Leah Barnes.

After we finished the Tea Transmission, I sat silently with jewelled tears nestling in my eyes. Not because there was anything wrong or upsetting but because of how cracked open to Beauty I felt from listening to her speak True Words.

What is especially astounding, it feels to me, is that Leah and I have known each other for about 7 years (I think) and have only ever met in person once, earlier this year in Camden. There were tears in my eyes then too. It reminds me that in amongst all the crazy, unsettling, overwhelming noise of an online life, there are pockets of deep connection, sovereignty, positive impact, inspiration and genuine connection. I think perhaps we just need to get still enough to be cracked open by it.

Leah describes herself as a curator of wearable art.
Which is another way of saying much of the jewellery, clothing, bags or shoes she’s fallen in love with and bought over the years were all made by individual artisans or small businesses who bring a vision to life with their own hands.
As the world speeds up and homogenises, buying things made solely by human hands feels like an important act of resistance.

"When I See the Hummingbird" by Dr. Elliot Lach is a tender folk ballad that captures the quiet magic of spring's return. This was a very special all ages dance on Mother's Day. Such a treasure to witness so many little humans and parents coming to dance. More to come for sure ;)

🦅"May We All Fly Like Eagles" 🦅 This song holds a very special place in my heart, carrying me back to countless beautiful moments of singing with soul tribe friends around the fire, drumming, dancing, and chanting together in the raw, within the sacred spaces alongside our Grandmother Aya plant medicines and sound healing ceremonies.

This song first came to me after my car accident in 2008. It was during those four years of healing recovering from a broken jaw, TBI injuries, and the challenges of being unconscious for three days that this prayer song became a source of strength, healing, and resilience for me.

The song is an Indigenous prayer song, its original writer unknown, yet it has traveled across the world and been sung in many different ways. For me, it came through as a calling to add the heartbeat of my buffalo drum, and deeper beats, so that it may be shared more widely & played at conscious gatherings where people can drum, spread their wings & soar while dancing, and remembering the medicine of the Eagle: Rising above all obstacles and flying higher 🦅

Through this song, I also call upon other winged allies who have guided me on my journey—Condor, Hummingbird, Butterfly, Dove, and the Phoenix. Each carries a message of transformation, beauty, and courage, and together they weave a prayer for unity and love.

"Pictureplane"(Travis Egedy), is a popular artist known for making his come up in the electronic music scene, DIY Venues, also popular for hanging around artists like "Grimes" and "Crystal Castles" in the early come up days of these artist, he is also the one who came up with the word "Witch House" which is a playful word on "House" music, though "Witch House" is now a popular music genre that is enjoyed by many.

"Crystal Castles" are actually one of the very first, if not the first electronic music duo to actually invent "Witch House" music, as you can hear dark beats and sorrow drawn out voices off of some of their early (demo songs/ Demo Album) dating back from "2007" and before that, which is crazy to think since during that time "Witch House" did not have a name for itself yet.
