In 2013, Owl wanted to expand his musical vision and push the boundaries of his creativity. This led him to delve into new sonic territories, capturing the attention of labels such as Silent Season, Lowless, Huinali, Stasis, DNO, re:st and Muzan Editions. His distinctive sound began to resonate within the electronic music community, setting the stage for his continued evolution as an artist.

Owl’s aptitude for creating subtle, lush sonic journeys keeps expanding and his last releases should further cement his reputation. The artist’s discography is in perpetual evolution : from autonomic dnb, deep techno to a dreamy & melancholy ambient journey.

We first came across Funes through his engaging sets, continuously unfolding layers that pull you deeper in. When we got in touch, he shared his perspective on music beyond the club, how he uses it as a personal outlet to channel emotions and craft something beautiful. For Funes, music isn't just something you listen to; it's a space to reflect, lose yourself, and create a meaningful connection with the world around you, something we deeply resonate with. This podcast is a continuation of his exploration of sound and self.

Through this mix, Funes invites you to experience deep, melancholic pads, cinematic textures, hypnotic rhythms, and the heartbeat of techno, dub, noise, and experimental elements. He also integrates music without a beat, reflecting his love for breaks and bass. His vision extends beyond the dance floor: "With my music, I want to create a special sphere that goes on a deeper level where you have to engage seriously with what you are listening to," he shares. “Music for me also has a significant relevance at alternative spaces, i.e., at home, where it is possible to take you on a kind of dreamy journey and open your mind in another way."

The release of Agonia in 2021 marked a defining moment in Funes's path. Self-released on Bandcamp, the album was deeply personal, created as a way to process the loss of his father who passed away three years earlier. “Life is very complex, and with music, you can give it a kind of sonic picture,” he explains. This powerful emotional outlet has become central to his artistic identity, allowing him to transform life’s contrasts—the dark and the bright—into inspiration.

By combining the track selection for this mix, Funes hopes to create spaces to forget, gain spirituality, and find meaning.

SKIN #029 Funes

For our 31st podcast, we want to welcome Night Garden. Born in London & having lived in Bristol, James Laing aka Night Garden draws from the sounds of those two cities, alongside musical knowledge gained during his classical compositional training. With releases on Melifera, Bahn, Indefinite Pitch, and Bait, his music combines modern sound design with classical theoretical ideas. 

Night Garden is a musical project embodying an imagined space between our conscious reality & the land of dreams. It is a liminal point in space & time; a home to drifting forms & sounds unknown. Suspended in a twilight haze, its nebulous inhabitants float into distant obscurities, shedding ephemeral traces from their transient skin.

Night Garden draws inspiration from extensive reading on nature and philosophy, endlessly amazed about the diversity of life. A particular interest lies in the diversity in body technology of different species & how their body composition impacts their felt experience “Fish, for example, sense the world in a completely different way than we do, which I find amazing,” he explains. Trying to understand a whole different way of sensing the world is something he finds inspiring. His musical projects are often inspired by thought processes that stem from sources like these.

 For this mix, Night Garden sets the scene in a damp, dense, dimly lit environment. “"The introduction focusses on electronics which are abstract and machine generated, yet reminiscent of sounds from the natural world. This juxtaposition is something that I often look for in music”.
