In 1979 I acquired an old dictaphone from a bank (I’m guessing it was from the 60s as banks tend to hang on to their old equipment). Anyway, I didn’t really have a use for it at first, but then decided at some point to put it to work making recordings from my air band radio. This proved quite successful and I managed to capture a number of interesting and rare aircraft movements. I even went one step further and, when the planes were coming over my house on runway 23 approach, I combined the ATC recordings with the sound of the actual aircraft passing overhead (see my other recording here: Sound-vision-10193594 – Aviation-archive-1). This recording consists of West Drayton ATC, Heathrow Tower and RAF Northolt approach, most of which I managed to observe from my home in Southall, West London.

And now, for the first time in over 40 years, I can make these unique recordings available to the world for anyone who might be interested to hear 'live' Air Traffic Control from 1979 😍 - I hope they provide some interest and enjoyment!

The aircraft became VH-WNH and then VH-OYH and is apparently still flying!*** (+ SN607 737, KL905 DC-8 KLM Cargo 28L approach + CY044 720 from Luton into Heathrow, JL424 747, SV173 TriStar - 28R approach)

Track 04 - RAF Northolt tower + West Drayton ATC SWE78 Royal Swedish AF Douglas C-47B Skytrain (DC-3) 79008 runway 26 departure, radar vectors to 130.35, then to Stansted radar on 125.55 (heading back to Sweden)
Swing02 USAF C-9A on runway 26 departure (+ yours truly narrating ;) with conflicting unknown traffic - then to Stansted on 125.55 c/w “Bandit Country” quote!
Navy40997 US Navy Convair VC-131F 140097 (operated by Naval Air Facility Mildenhall) on runway 26 departure with 28 POB (persons on board) (+ Ascot7904 landing)
G-TY Piper PA-31-350 Chieftain G-CITY attempted departure for the Isle of Man (problems getting flight clearance)
Husky99 Royal Norwegian Air Force attempted departure for Oslo Fornebu (ENFB) - more problems getting flight clearance - then lost flight plan - then Heathrow runway change affecting departure! Major problems getting ATC clearances with West Drayton. (+ Army Air 344 helicopter passing over the field and Ascot743 helicopter take off + yours truly narrating ;)

Track 05 - West Drayton ATC + RAF Northolt tower Duke11C US Army Beech C-12 PAR radar assisted approach to Runway 26 (+ yours truly narrating ;) - to ground control 134.15 parked at Line 7 followed by a quick departure as Duke11D! (+ Ascot1450)
