Should the U.S. Military Defend U.S. Commercial Space Operators Involved In Ukraine?

This week is the third episode of a month-long look at the different aspects of Russia’s War in Ukraine and space, the space business, and defense. It is highly recommended to listen to the prior episode first, to understand how Ukraine is using commercial space-based assets to close the kill-chain and achieve strategic decision-making advantage against Russia. 

As U.S. commercial space operators are involved in the conflict, a first in any war, this episode explores just what responsibility does the U.S. government have in defending these U.S. flagged assets. Laura Winter speaks with Steve Wood, the Senior Director of Maxar Technologies’ News Bureau; Christopher Stone, a Senior Advisor and Consultant with Core-CSI, LLC, who is a former Special Assistant to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy, and author of “Reversing the Tao: A Framework for Credible Space Deterrence”; and with David Burbach, an Associate Professor of National Security Affairs at the US Naval War College, who is an expert on space and warfare.

Clashes between Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces spread to different regions in the country, creating a humanitarian crisis of immense proportions. Hundreds have died and tens of thousands of Sudanese are attempting to escape the violence. Host Shahram Aghamir spoke to Prof. Khalid Medani about this topic.

Dr. Khalid Mustafa Medani is associate professor of political science and Islamic Studies and Chair of the African Studies Program at McGill University. He received a B.A. from Brown University, an M.A. from Georgetown University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Medani has published widely on the on the roots of civil conflict and the political economy of Islamist activism in Sudan, informal finance in Somalia, the obstacles to state building in Iraq, and the role of informal networks in the rise of violent extremism. More recently, his research has focused on the role of youth activism and democratization and he is working on a book manuscript on the prospects and challenges for democracy in Sudan. in Dr. Medani is a previous recipient of a Carnegie Scholar on Islam award from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Nearly ten years since the onset of the crisis in Yemen this discussion provided an in-depth assessment of the conflict over the past decade. Panellists examined the local origins of the war, the humanitarian catastrophe that has ensued, and the challenges for sustainable development given the prolonged violence. Regional dynamics fueling the crisis were also analysed, including factors related to the war in Gaza. With the March 2024 milestone approaching, speakers assessed stalled peace efforts and policy options for international stakeholders moving forward.

Ahmed Al Khameri is the Team Leader for the FCDO-funded programme, The Yemen Support Fund at Chemonics UK. Most recently, he was the governance advisor under the DFID Yemen team leading DFID’s stabilization and governance efforts. 

Marwa Baabbad is Director of the Yemen Policy Centre. She is a researcher and development consultant with over ten years of experience working in the fields of community engagement, gender, peace and security, and youth political inclusion. 

Andreas Krieg is Associate Professor at the School of Security Studies at King’s College London and a Fellow at the Institute of Middle Eastern Studies. Andreas is the Director of MENA analytica – a political risk firm – that works on Yemen and the Horn of Africa. 

Greg Shapland is an independent researcher, writer and consultant on politics, security, resources and environment (including water) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Greg is also a Visiting Senior Fellow at the LSE Middle East Centre. From 1979 until 2015, he served in the MENA Research Group in the FCO.

Navigating the Crisis: Yemen 10 Years On

Carolina Amoroso is an Argentine international journalist. She first came to Ukraine at the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. As soon as she got here, she realized that she knew nothing about the country despite her thorough preparation for the trip. But even then, she understood that this war for Ukrainians is an existential one, a war for their own identity. In May 2024, Amoroso visited Ukraine for the fourth time, even cutting her honeymoon in Europe short for this purpose. In particular, she reported from the south of Ukraine on the lives of ordinary people. The journalist is sure that there is no fatigue from the stories of life in Ukraine among the international audience, it is present only in the media themselves.

Journalist Natalia Gumenyuk talks with Amoroso about the hypocrisy of human rights defenders in Latin America, the romanticization of Cuba, why the Pope remains a mystery to her, what to expect from Argentina's President Milei, and how political violence has become a thing of the past in her country.

Sally Hayden, journalist and photographer focused on migration, conflict, and humanitarian crises and an international correspondent for The Irish Times, participates in a fireside chat with IIEA Researcher Tara Kukec and a Q&A session with members. Based on her acclaimed book “My Fourth Time, We Drowned: Seeking Refuge on the World’s Deadliest Migration Route,” Ms Hayden discusses the movement of refugees and migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, their treatment on the way to Europe, and how EU institutions and citizens have responded to the ongoing migration crisis. She also provides insights into her personal experience conveying the stories of refugees and what she has witnessed throughout her reporting.
