The Fresh Selects Remix Series continues with our first revisit to New Zealand multi-talent LAPIS's 2020 debut, 'Third Person You.' "The World is but a Mystery" is the official debut single from ttwig – a new solo project from JUICEB☮X (the vocal half of Fresh Selects duo, Figmore). 

A veritable Swiss Army knife of talent – JUICEB☮X raps, sings, produces, and plays just about every instrument (even including the trumpet), and his prolific releases over the years have run the gamut of different styles – proudly dubbing his label for self-releases, "Ellen DeGenreless." 

And now, with his new ttwig moniker, taken from a song title on JUICEB☮X's 2021 'Overthin King' LP, he's purposefully honing in on a more specific sound – one rooted in the more psychedelic side of nostalgia, centered around more organic sounds and textures, and mostly focusing on his singing, songwriting and live instrumentation.

"i really wanted to make an epic psych rock song with no drums, reminiscent of some of my influences from the late 60’s. something with lyrics that held wisdom & could serve as a mantra. a gentle reminder to open your eyes & really take in what’s going on rather than distracting ourselves into oblivion. (side note: i always picture mumbo jumbo from banjo kazooie when the “OO, AH” vocals come in at the end hahaha)

"written on a day when i was feeling extra low, 'Waking Up' is about dealing with depression. knowing you’re in a funk but unable to break out of it. as something i’ve learned to live with since a young age, i wanted to turn this feeling/experience into something sonically beautiful. after all, being able to feel any emotion whether it is pleasant or not means you are alive, & that’s pretty tight."

"'umbra' is defined as the fully shaded inner region of a shadow cast by an opaque object. this was an interesting one. i actually just pressed record & freestyled these lyrics. the words just flowed out of me. after listening back to it a bit after its creation, i realized the song was my inner most self realizing that i was going to break up with my girlfriend. 'i already gave every ounce of me, why aren’t we crossing the boundary?'"

"this is a thank you letter to my hometown of Ossining, NY. i had seen the Brazilian maestros, Joao Dontato (RIP) & Arthur Verocai, in concert in the summer of 2019, thru the 'Jazz is Dead' concert series. extremely inspired, i took that energy & wrote this song. i say thank you in portuguese, japanese, spanish, german, italian, korean, hebrew, arabic, russian, english, slovak, mandarin & polish, in that order!"
