Se habla a menudo del misterio de la fe, pero en textos como el del Evangelio según Marcos, no hay mayor misterio que la incredulidad. Uno se pregunta: ¿Cómo no podían creer en Jesús, aquellos que le conocieron, escucharon y fueron testigos de sus milagros? La cuestión no es como algunos dicen, que nos falten evidencias. Nuestro problema, como nos muestra el sexto capítulo de la Buena Noticia según Marcos, no es intelectual, sino moral. 

"No sé de qué te puedo salvar" dice la canción de Kings of Convenience. el maravilloso dúo noruego, que en el año 2000 muestra su perplejidad para darse cuenta cuál es el problema del que alguien necesita ser salvado. John Lennon escribió su particular No Credo, cuando siguiendo la terapia del grito de Janov, se enfrentaba al dolor del abandono del padre y la muerte de su madre con la presión de la fama, la autodestrucción de la droga, la soledad, el rechazo y el miedo. En "Dios" (1970) encuentra "la medida del dolor", cuando ya no puede creer más que en Yoko y él, porque "el sueño se ha acabado". El músico cristiano Charlie Peacock lo llama "Huir de la luz" en su primer disco con el grupo Vector, "La virtud del maniquí" (1983), antes de empezar su singular carrera en solitario.

El conflicto histórico que más se ha comparado con el de Juan El Bautista y Herodes, que narra este capítulo, ha sido el de Tomás Moro con Enrique VIII. Nuestra visión del ahora santo católico, viene en gran medida de "Un hombre para la eternidad" (1966), que en Hispanoamérica tiene un título de teología casi luterana, "Un hombre de los dos reinos". El obra de Robert Bolt, autor de "La misión", parece de un ferviente católico, aunque fue comunista y casi se casa tantas veces como Enrique VIII, cuatro en vez de seis. Fue inteligentemente llevada al cine en Inglaterra por Fred Zinemmann, el director americano de "Sólo ante el peligro" de origen judío austriaco, que perdió a sus padres en el Holocausto. Premiada con seis Oscar cuenta con actores de la talla de Orson Welles y un joven John Hurt. Escuchamos escenas de la película en castellano, que José de Segovia compara con la realidad histórica y el texto del Evangelio, sobre la banda sonora de Georges Delerue. 

Juan El Bautista inspiró también una de las canciones más conocidas de John Martyn, el cantautor británico que escribió el tema que lleva su nombre como título en 1970, junto a la que era su esposa entonces, Beverly. Todavía más nos gusta la música de "Salomé", que escribió después de Pulp, Jarvis Cocker en 2017, junto a Chilly Gonzales, sobre este pasaje del Evangelio. El dilema de Herodes está bien expresado en la canción de Paddy McAloon en 1984 para Prefab Sprout, que considera "cruel el evangelio que nos libera, pero te aleja de mí". Es el problema de la fe, una cuestión moral, no intelectual. No es que no podamos, sino que no queremos...
