V13 Cover Story: Daniel Ash of Love And Rockets

The year is 1992. America has already begun its transition out from the hair metal of the ‘80s and is falling deeper under the spell of grunge and electronica. Within this liminal couple of years, it seems as if downtempo music and vinyl sampled hip-hop beats have managed to infiltrate every hot artist’s discography... it is within this slipstream that “Running Out Of Road” exists.

This is the fifth of a multi-volume journey through my earliest musical memories - tracks that I loved or made an impression on me while growing up.

These polished memories are from High School and early college years mostly. I went from a New Wave kid to a full on punk in these years. Had a Mohawk and loved Dead Kennedys but still woke up to the radio and MTV was going strong and playing only videos.  At Colgate I DJ'd for four years on WRCU alternative radio.

After each track I credit the underlying work and the year of its release.

I am a House DJ, so all of the tracks I have acquired over the years, be it vinyl or digital, are remixed at dance floor bpm so get up and dance!

Believe it or not, this episode's been a long time coming for us. We've talked about covering this movie since the beginning of the pod, but we finally sat down to review HOUSE (1985)! This film from director Steve Miner and writers Fred Dekker and Ethan Wiley has been a favorite of our host Nick for many, many years, and it was a delight to finally discuss it on the show. Although this review is not without its cost, as Nick has to endure far more comic talk than he could have possibly anticipated before we hit "record." But we had a blast chatting about the movie, taboo tooth-brushing techniques, Herculean efforts to unearth four eighties comic books, introducing the K.R.E.O.N. certification system and much more. We really hope everyone enjoys the review.

He’s also played with Terrance Trent Darby, The The, and Bjork as well! Bruce is currently involved with Ashes and Diamonds—the incredible Super Group with Daniel Ash from Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, and Love and Rockets, and Sade’s bass player Paul Denman. After seven years together and loads of interruptions and restarts, their debut album “Ashes and Diamonds and Forever” is finally getting its long overdue release (10/31/25). Ryder Harrison Houston is an American filmmaker, musician, and performer born just outside of Dallas, Texas. At age 19, he released his first film, "Rapture in Blue": a noir-ish ode to the ubiquitous gothic zeitgeist of the late 20th century. Included on the eponymous soundtrack is the haunting theme “Wine (A Sea Of Future)” performed by frequent collaborator Ariana Kelly, and it was this very release that would catalyze the future of Houston’s musical endeavors.

As much as his evocative sound dotes on alternative pop acts Depeche Mode, Garbage, and even Madonna at her most subversive, it also seems to suggest something greater operating on the periphery: a dark, omnipresent melodrama not unlike the crooning music of David Lynch composer Angelo Badalamenti or the lush, do-or-die romance of a young Lana Del Rey. Nevertheless, his eclectic body of work remains adhered to a certain groovy allusion to opium-den electricians the likes of Portishead and Massive Attack, with his spidery vocals weaving clichés of lust and rock ‘n’ roll menace anew.

It is within this blasphemous little slipstream that Ryder Houston’s unique brand of sonic nostalgia exists — a sullen musical seduction echoing back from a liminal moment in time where downtempo music and freeze-dried hip-hop beats managed to infiltrate every hot artist’s discography, mutating genre ties and birthing something wholly itself.
