Cannabis Use in the United States and its Impact on Gastrointestinal Health (NCP)

In this podcast, Guest Editor Dr David Evans interviews Dr. Savas Tsikis, lead author of the paper “Fat Malabsorption in Short Bowel Syndrome: A Review of Pathophysiology and Therapeutics” published in the April 2024 supplement of Nutrition in Clinical Practice. Dr Tsikis is a surgical resident at Beth Israel Deconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School.  He has been working in the laboratory of Dr. Mark Puder at Boston Children’s Hospital where they investigate the impact of fat malabsorption on their patients with short bowel syndrome and are developing treatment strategies to address fat malabsorption and improve outcomes.

Fat Malabsorption in Short Bowel Syndrome-New Understanding of Mechanisms and Treatment Strategies

The June 2024 podcast features Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Dr. Terry Brown who holds a position as the Medical City Healthcare Clinical and Dietetic Internship Program Director which is located in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Brown shares her passion for blenderized tube feeding and her desire to promote awareness and education on the use in clinical practice.  She reviews the development of a survey tool that was administered to adult and pediatric RDNs associated with ASPEN. The results overwhelmingly supported RDN’s desire to support the use of blenderized tube feedings, but more education was desired.

Considerations for Medical Nutrition Therapy Management

The October 2024 podcast features Pharmacist and Professor emeritus, Dr. Jay Mirtallo from the Ohio State University and a Clinical Practice Specialist for ASPEN.  Dr. Mirtallo shares the results of an influential patient-based survey of consumers on parenteral nutrition.  He highlights PN access issues from the patient perspective ranging from product shortages to financial burdens and uniquely identifies unconsidered areas for improvement in the medical system to improve patient safety. He comments on action steps for all nutrition support clinicians including an emphasis on legislation to pass the medical nutrition therapy act allowing reimbursement for the role of the registered dietitian.
