You look at me and you see a god. You see the smile, the flag, the strength. You see the perfect hero… and you’re right to see that. But you never see what’s underneath. You never see the price of being a god born among… mud people.

They didn't give me a family. They gave me a cold, white lab . They didn't give me a mother's love. They gave me doctors with clipboards and psychologists who engineered a craving for approval . My first memory isn't of a lullaby; it's of the sound of my own heat vision lasering my way out of the womb, killing the woman who carried me . My first touch wasn't a caress; it was my hand being forced into a furnace to test my durability .

I was so alone. So scared. It was like drowning, and I had to figure it all out by myself . All I had was a soft blue blanket to cling to . Do you have any idea what that does to a child? I was a sweet boy once, you know. I tried to cuddle up to Vogelbaum… and he rejected me. He said he had to "go to work on the boy" . That's when they started building the monster you fear today.

I craved connection so desperately that when a teacher told me she could be my mother, I hugged her. I just wanted to feel that love… and I broke her spine. I killed her with a hug . And do you know what my caretakers did? They told me it would be taken care of. That I'd get another teacher. They were expendable . That was the lesson. The only real lesson I ever learned: your kind is fragile, temporary, and utterly disposable.

So yes, I do terrible things. I am cruel. I am merciless . But you created me. Your need for a perfect symbol, your worship, your fear… it’s all I have. It’s the only love I will ever understand.

You want to know why I can do whatever I want? Because I have nothing to lose. I never did. This world denied me love, so I will rule it through fear. It denied me a family, so I will make my own, with my son, Ryan, and we will be a new genesis . You took everything from me, and now… now I have nothing to lose. And that makes this whole fucking shitball my birthright .

So go ahead. Love me, or fear me. It’s all the same to me. It’s all that keeps me from the silence of that little boy and his blue blanket, alone in the bad room. Because in the end, the only man in the sky… is me .

Larry Ostola speaks with Marc Milner about his book Second Front: Anglo-American Rivalry and the Hidden Story of the Normandy Campaign. In June 1944, an Allied army of British, American, and Canadian troops sought to open up a Second Front in Normandy. But they were not only fighting to bring the Second World War to an end. After decades of Anglo-American struggle for dominance, they were also contending with one another—to determine who would ascend to global hegemony once Hitler’s armies fell. Marc Milner traces this bitter rivalry as it emerged after the First World War and evolved during the fragile peace which led to the Second. American media and domestic politics dominated the Allied powers’ military strategy, overshadowing the contributions of Britain and the remarkably critical role played by Canada in establishing this Second Front. Culminating in the decisive Normandy campaign, Milner shows how the struggle for supremacy between Churchill and Roosevelt changed the course of the Second World War—and how their rivalry shaped our understanding of the Normandy campaign, and the war itself. 

Marc Milner is emeritus professor of history at the University of New Brunswick and former director of the Gregg Centre for the Study of War and Society. He is the author of ten acclaimed books, including Stopping the Panzers and Battle of the Atlantic.
