Morning of The 9th of January 2024. The beach is brimming with Oyster Catchers and Curlews pecking and churning the sand with the precision of surgeons, occasionally needing to turn their tools on the odd cheeky gull that attempts to make off with their hard earned breakfast.  I disturb a murder of crows gathered on a wooden bridge overlooking a small stream, they click and caw at me for taking their seats and prime view of the Oyster Catchers spoils, I decide it best to follow the stream and give them space. I finish my walk at a large rusting metal sculpture overlooking the bay. Being a musically inclined individual and not a visual artist I do what comes only natural and give it a hefty smack to investigate the reverberations. The local bell-ringer clearly takes notice and joins me in a duet to welcome in the new morning.

SoundWalking - 090124 - The Coast Waves Back, Disturbing The Perch & Church Bell Duet

It is the morning of the 11th of January 2024. Right outside my door, I stop to enjoy the early morning bird song, the delicate clinking of the boat masts from the harbor cuts through the air out of view, a gentle acousmatic delight. As I make my way down towards the main road, towards traffic, I have to stop and enjoy at just how audible the birds still are alongside the traffic. After all, this morning belongs to both of us and we all have our ritual songs to sing. I find a set of steps leading down to the water and decide to sit a while. The waves come in long from the ocean to my left, bashing against the harbor wall and rather than dissipate they rebound to my right, cutting a thatched shape across the water that resembles a rice field. A little ways up and around the coastal walk I spot some Oyster Catchers digging for their breakfast. Meticulous and steady, they puncture the sand with a dedicated repetition though sadly, way out of listening range.The tranquility is broken when a poor old, spooked Labrador directs my attention to workman chipping away at the grass pathway, unearthing stones and grit, patting the patches of more aesthetically pleasing greenery back down with the flat side of his pick. His efforts are slow, steady and meticulous. I look back out at the Oyster Catchers and decide to head for home.

Dawn chorus in Burgh-Haamstede

On a hike in the Outer Hebrides, not far from artist Julie Brook's Winter Wall there was a sudden excitement. Aside from the elements churning the airwaves, these parts are silent. So I was happy to encounter this gregarious bunch. It sounded like the feeling was not necessarily shared. I love the stone clacking sounds of the aptly named stonechats.

I am a multi instrumentalist, composer and sound engineer.  My musical pieces explore the meeting point of composition and improvisation while addressing thoughts on sound synthesis, music technology and live performance. My soundtracks explore states wherein acoustic, digital and analog signals intertwine and merge into one body of sound.
