TIMES OF BROTH

"THE HIDDEN HAND" is a dense and unsettling exploration of sound. It blends the improvisational spirit and harmonic language of jazz with the abrasive textures and unpredictable structures of noise music. Don't expect moments of fractured saxophone or other jazz instrumentation because they're buried deep within and are battling against layers of static, feedback, and electronic distortion. The track creates a claustrophobic and intense atmosphere, where familiar jazz elements are deconstructed and contorted by a raw, soft but often overwhelming sonic assault. It's a challenging listen that sits at the intersection of avant-garde jazz and noise, rewarding those seeking a truly unconventional and confrontational sonic experience. Although rooted deeply in doom music and drone metal, this track might not be for listeners that prefer traditional notions of these genres.

THE HIDDEN HAND

Battling depression, one synth at a time.
This recording is an attempt to convey the feeling of being sad, irritable, unfocused, empty, useless and hopeless.
It's an attempt at regaining interest in activities you once enjoyed. It's something to do instead of sleeping too little or too much.
It's a way to try and stop feeling guilty about not touching your instruments for what feels like months.
It's what you get when you start overdubbing layers of beeps and bleeps, hiss sounds, and just keep piling on and on.
"Echoed Sentiments II" is a 30 minute long track of semi-melodic, droning, synthesizer noise. While much more on the dark and ambient side than harsh noise, it's a wall of sound nonetheless. But it's also a heart on a sleeve.

Echoed Sentiments II

Hear my offering, "EXPLORING NOISE TEXTURES",  a two-track album that delves too deep into the interplay between sound, imagination  and sadness, rethinking personal experiences that might resonate with the listener's emotional landscape via sounds. Each 25 minute track serves as an exploration of the self, where dissonant layers of synth noise weave together delicate ambient like textures, challenging the inner peace and further exploring notions of music and art in therapy. I feel that in the noise genre, the often-overlooked spaces of sadness and introspection are neglected as the genre tends to be sometimes be more anger driven, transforming raw emotional responses and angst into an auditory assault; where this is an attempt to turn negative emotions into something that serves the purpose of healing, venting and sharing, both haunting and profound, but not as aggressive as HNW tends to feel. I invite listeners to embrace the beauty of chaos and the significance of emotional vulnerability, hoping this could leave you pondering upon your own rich tapestry of sadness and sounds long after the final note fades.

“The harmonium I use was gifted to my grandfather by his friend 45 years ago, and then he gave it to me,” says Kolkata musician Nilotpal Das. “I started playing when I was around 14. It’s really old and worn out, with an old sound to it. I wanted to experiment with how I can make drone sounds with it.”

The instrument appears in modified forms in his expansive, sometimes noisy, droning electroacoustic compositions. Another side of Das’s production is a collision-heavy club output that takes cues from “dubstep, noise, jungle, drum ’n’ bass” among numerous other sources of inspiration. Das works under his own name and the alias Bios Contrast, which “comes from the Greek word bios, meaning life, and contrast, which also means against life – I don’t really like the name but I’m stuck with it”.

As to how he decides which name suits each release, he leans into the confusion: “The stuff I put out is like a mixed bag, much like [Japanese video game designer] Hideo Kojima. I feel like now my stuff shouldn’t make sense all the time and that’s good, in a way I’ll have more artistic freedom.” His main tools are his laptop and Ableton, which he runs almost everything through. “My club tracks are mostly sample-based, and I also use harmonium samples,” he explains. Alongside soft-synths and samplers on his drone and ambient pieces he plays “guitar as well, but not as good as the harmonium. It’s been two years of playing the guitar – I used it with a bow like a string instrument. I also have a violin, but I play the guitar as a violin.”
