A discussion on the new service Open Polar: The Global Open Access Portal for Research Data and Publications on the Arctic and Antarctic (https://openpolar.no). Presenting only freely available documents on the Arctic and Antarctic, Open Polar is a thematic search engine that can be a useful tool for both researchers and decision makers. Tamer Abu-Alam explains the reasons for filtering out all research documents that are not available in open access, thereby promoting open science. Of the 1,8 million records currently included in Open Polar, approx. 22,5 percent are research datasets, which makes the service unique. Host: Per Pippin Aspaas.

R2OS - A closer look at Open Hardware with Jose Urra Llanusa and Santosh Ilamparuthi

The National Library of Sweden recently launched a platform for Swedish Open Access journals, known as Publicera (publicera.kb.se). So far, three peer-reviewed journals from the humanities and social sciences have completed their transition onto the platform. In this episode, the editors of the journals describe the transition process and reflect upon the economics, workflows, technicalities and not least the strategic goals of their journals in an international open science landscape.

“Who are these Open Science people, anyway?” In this special installment Felix and Sicco interview Susanna Bloem and Martijn van der Meer on their project called ‘Faces of Open Science’. These two young researchers in the field of the history and philosophy of science went out to find oral histories – as it happens – for which they spoke to a myriad of Open Science minded colleagues at Utrecht University. From that they distilled a number of typical persona’s, all with their own unique motivations and ideals drawing them into the movement. We find out that Open Science isn’t a monolith and why we need more internal debates on values.

Open Science, Rapid Publication, and Collaboration

On today’s episode, we’re commemorating National DNA Day in the United States by considering the role that DNA plays in our society. First, we welcome Amber Hartman Scholz, co-author of the article “Myth-busting the provider-user relationship for digital sequence information”, looking at how genetic resources are actually used and shared across the globe. We discuss the surprising findings of this research as well as the important implications for policy makers. We then interview Dee Denver, the author of The Dharma in DNA: Insights at the Intersection of Biology and Buddhism, to talk about the significance of DNA research and what the lay person should know about the uses and findings of DNA. We also talk about another aspect that is much less well known: the role that DNA plays at the intersection of spirituality and science. Underlying both interviews is the question of open science and why it matters, specifically, for DNA research.
