Innovations in public cloud services and private cloud technologies driving more organizations to build hybrid cloud operations that fit their particular business needs. Hybrid cloud strategies are allowing IT leaders to optimize the total cost of ownership (TCO) while meeting present and future business needs, according to Brett Tanzer, vice president of product management at Microsoft. 

In this Tech Barometer podcast, Tanzer talks about how Azure’s customer needs have changed as they move to hybrid cloud IT operations, blending owned and operated data centers with Azure cloud services. 

“The infrastructure that Azure provides, really makes it possible for customers to reach new levels of TCO using their Nutanix solutions,” said Tanzer.

“You get to take your existing solutions that have been highly tuned and optimized, you get to bring them to the cloud for further optimization, better TCO, more expanded reach, and then you get to count on the Nutanix roadmap for perpetuity. So all of the work that my friends at Nutanix are doing to make Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) better, you get to count on that. And you know, we have a lot of plans with our friends at Nutanix to drive more integration with Azure to continue to lower the cost and expand the scenarios.”

It’s the Easter holidays so we had to record this episode over Zoom because Pierre is on his travels. After another AI Armageddon tangent, the guys start by reflecting on a recent UK decision to investigate its public cloud market over competition concerns, which coincides with their broader concerns in this area. They move on to recap a recent visit to Vodafone, at which it showed off its energy-saving efforts, before concluding with a review of some recent corporate shenanigans.

Just as unusual was the presence of major news so early in the year so the lads start by analysing HPE’s mega acquisition of Juniper Networks, and what it means for the telecoms sector. They move on to speculate about the unintended consequences of America’s attempts to suppress Chinese AI development before concluding with a look at the UK Post Office IT scandal.

The pod was delighted to welcome its first ever special guest from Microsoft – Shawn Hakl VP of 5G Strategy. They start by asking for an overview of what Microsoft’s interest is in the telecoms sector these days, which has increased significantly in recent years. That leads naturally to a review of the role the public cloud plays for operators, before they conclude by asking Shawn about the 5G part of his job title.

A bit of a hybrid effort this week as the lads record over Zoom, but still come into the studio anyway. They start by discussing a piece Iain wrote, highlighting the increasing vulnerability faced by the world as everything moves into the public cloud. This leads to more Iain stuff, this time covering Open RAN for a change, before Scott finally gets a look-in to go over stories of his covering the UK shared rural network and possible 5G vendor swap in Portugal.

The lads made the annual pilgrimage to Copenhagen for the DTW event and thought it appropriate to record a pod with their Danish mate – analyst John Strand. Pausing only to review the beers John kindly brought along, they start by reviewing the event and specifically the opening keynotes. They move on to discuss industry initiatives in general before concluding with a chat about Strand Consult’s recent report analysing the effect of recent European elections on the telecoms industry.
