We follow how deportation policy has evolved, expanding massively in the aftermaths of World War One and World War Two, while shifting its main targets -- from political radicals and dissidents, to organized criminals, to "undesirable" racial and ethnic groups including Asians and Mexicans. We examine the changing laws and judicial rulings that have carved out an exception for deportation, allowing the government nearly unlimited and unchecked power, with no recourse to the protections of the Bill of Rights -- and finally, we consider how the Trump administration's recent failed attempts to deport supporters of the Palestinian cause might lead to a small crack in the wall sealing the deportation process off from the courts and the Constitution.

The discussion stems from the speakers' contributions which formed part of a recently published symposium in Identities on the book, exploring the changing politics of race in British society and beyond.

Les Back is Professor of Sociology at the University of Glasgow. His main fields of interest are the sociology of race and racism, ethnicity, multiculturalism, urban culture, music and sport. Les has written for The Guardian, Times Higher, Open Democracy and Discover Society, and has also made documentary films. He has presented podcast series including Streetsigns for the Centre of Urban and Community Research, Goldsmith, University of London, and RecoveringCommunity within the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow. His latest book, The Unfinished Politics of Race, co-authored with Michael Keith, John Solomos and Kabir Shukra, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2022.

John Solomos is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Warwick. He has researched and written widely on the history and contemporary forms of race and ethnic relations in Britain, theories of race and racism, the politics of race, equal opportunity policies, multiculturalism and social policy, race and football, and racist movements and ideas. His most recent book is Antiracism: A Critique (Polity Press 2025). He has been Joint-Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Ethnic and Racial Studies since 1995. 

Michael Keith is the Director of the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) at the University of Oxford and the Director of the PEAK Urban Research programme. He was, until 2021, co-ordinator of Urban Transformations (The Economic and Social Research Council portfolio of investments and research on cities) and is the Co-Director of the Oxford Programme for the Future of Cities. He is also a Co-Investigator of the Open City research project. His research focuses on migration-related processes of urban change. 

Anya Ahmed is Professor of Wellbeing and Communities and Academic Director, Doctoral College at Manchester Metropolitan University. A social scientist with over 25 years academic experience, she previously worked as a housing practitioner, trainer and consultant. Her research focuses on the experiences of marginalized communities (with a specific focus on minoritized ethnic populations) and she has led a range of funded projects on housing and homelessness, migration, ageing, and health and social care. Much of her work involves interrogation of the theoretical, conceptual and applied nature of ‘community’ in national and international contexts. 

Trishauna Stewart is a British-Jamaican researcher, writer, educator and activist. She is currently completing her PhD at University College London. In her most recent research, Trishauna has re-expanded her focus to critically and connectively re-open and trace reproduced/reproductive patterns of movement as relative to the fictionality of forms of independence. She has developed a new framework (pyro-spectral politics), which she is utilizing widely in order to think through the nature and naturalization of Jamaican/Caribbean diaspora production and its inter-national, inter-diasporic, political re-historicizations and re-spatializations of the violences of Empire and Imperialism. Her theoretical framework contributes to the realm of decolonial theory more broadly.
