Following the Bungala River upstream from the previous recording site (https://www.tristanlouthrobins.com/fleurieu_soundmap/sites/NRM013.html), here a greater immediate ambience is present. Further removed from the sounds of the main road and partially enveloped by trees and steep banks that follow a sharp bend in the river's course. With another dense tract of reeds, their rustling - along with the susseration of eucalypts - dominates the recording, whilst wattle birds, lorikeets and wrens call out nearby.

Positioned down a slope next to the footbridge passing over the Bungala River, the distinctive calls of reed warblers can be heard. A light breeze occasionally passes through the reeds, its sibilant hiss mingling with the distant ambience of traffic passing through Normanville along the main street.

A Golden Keep was written in the Summer of 2023 through collaboration with the incredible bassoonist, Lauren Henning. Together, we created the concept for a work which would present a set of miniatures–each one following a different character that could be found in the keep of a castle. This fifth and final miniature introduces, “The Fairy Godmother”, who steps in to help out the princess of the previous movement--helping transform longing wishes into reality.

The spirit of Ritual Burn comes from the intersection of two deeply interrelated and inspiring processes, one that takes form within the ecosystem, the other within the soul. It is, for one, inspired by the hauntingly beautiful, intense but controlled methodology of the Dagara people of Burkina Faso, where acres of lush land are sometimes naturally set aflame as the warm season subsides, eventually making way for the local flora's regrowth. In Dagara cosmology, fire, while undoubtedly dangerous, is not necessarily destructive - it is a sacred element of transformation, crucial to clearing space for renewal, the kind of change that demands an empty vessel. So too, we must sometimes set fire to what no longer serves us - we quiver as we light the match, as we see what it illuminates, and oh, how it sears - showing us how completely wrong we can be. We see, perhaps for the first time, how painful beliefs thrust upon us, shame over who we believe we should not be - how they've taken so much from our lives, our cores. We breathe, tearfully, as the blaze radiates with us in unison - not to be rid of ourselves, but to become more fully who we are - continually meant to burn, continually meant to crumble, continually meant to transform, deeper and deeper into our beautiful complexity.

This week Colin features American singer Edith Gormezano (Eydie Gormé), who achieved notable success in her career in pop, Latin, and jazz genres. Oh, and she was famously married to Steve Lawrence! A lot of our songs are bitter sweet, such as jazz violinist and bandleader Ben Bernie bringing in Pat Kennedy to tell of a Faded Summer Love. The distinctive sound of the George Shearing Quintette gives us a September song from 1949, plus,there’s Nat King Cole, Al Bowlly with Geraldo, Tommy Dorsey,  and Jack Leonard.

Tristan Louth-Robins is a South Australian artist working principally in the medium of sound art and field recording. Ideas of sound and its signification are key elements in Louth-Robins' practice, traversing the space between the visual and aural his work is realised through the mediums of recordings, installation, visual art and performance. He is interested in sound and its associative implications - including its relationship to objects, technology, urban space, memory and the natural world. 


Since 2005, Louth-Robins has presented work in Australia and internationally as a solo artist, whilst also collaborating with artists, writers, researchers, musicians and performers. 

Working across a vast array of activities encompassing composition, sound design, installation art, field recording and workshops, his work has been featured in events such as the Adelaide Festival of Arts (2006), The National Regional Arts Festival (2012), Mildura-Wentworth Arts Festival (2013), Fairfax Festival (2013) and Adelaide Fringe Festival (2014); and selected works exhibited at galleries including The Australian Experimental Art Foundation (2009), SASA Gallery (2012, 2015), Light Square Gallery (2012) and FELT Space (2015). His audio works have been broadcast on radio including Radio National, Classic FM, The BBC (UK), Acoustic Frontiers (USA) and RBB (Germany).

Charlie Rutan specializes in the bagpipes of Scotland, Ireland, France and Italy; and numerous reed instruments from around the globe .  He is a classically trained musician with 35 full-time years of performing experience and credits in the Arts & Entertainment sector. Currently performs & records on the following instruments:
Scottish Highland Pipes,  Italian Zampogna,  French Cornemuse, Irish Uilleann Pipes.
Ciaramella, Friscaletti (Sicilian reed flutes), Clarinet, English Horn,
