We are pleased to welcome Dutch techno queen Selene to the label with her brand new two track 'Helion EP' to get any dust infused legs shaking. Selene who hails from the Netherlands delights with this magnificent EP, showcasing her exceptional musical taste.

The release kicks off with 'Helion' a peak time techno dance floor monster which features a blend of deep bass tones, driving drum programming, cleverly chopped samples and intricately laced chord progressions, building to a massive breakdown before rebuilding to an unrelenting crescendo of energetic drum beats, chord stabs and an ever-warped bassline. 'Helion' is a club monster that growls from the minute you push the play button.

The accompanying track 'The Hymn' is another pumping club affair utilizing a hypnotizing synth chord as the basis of the track, before all manner of varied melodies weave in and out of the stereo field to close out this wonderful 2 track release in style. Selene reinforces her reputation as one the scenes most exciting upcoming techno performers and once again showcases her huge array of production skills. Incredible stuff!

Influences:  My biggest influence is undoubtedly the friends and musical peers that I share artistic connection with. Whether it's through organizing events, mixing together at an afters, or sending music across the void - the people who I am emotionally connected to and enjoy chatting about music/art/life with are certainly the most influential in my musical world.

More abstractly I am influenced by narrative in DJ sets. I am compelled by Djs who have the ability to transport me into their unique world. I've experienced this transcendence on the dance floor during sets like Eris Drew at TUF til' dawn in 2018 and Powder closing at Sustain Release. I would, however, say that the DJ does not stand alone in creating this transcendent experience. As an organizer I am keenly aware of the confluence of people, place, and DJ as the trifecta that must act in harmony to create the most special and transformative experiences. Dance music is such an uniquely immersive type of music and that quality creates a situation where the sum is certainly greater than the parts if it's done with intention and care.   

Affiliations/Residencies/Projects: Secondnature ~ a label and underground event series. Formerly a member of TUF. I used to go by Aos and also am 1/2 of the project Sage. 

Favorite Quote:  Ok I would say I do not have a favorite quote. But I have a favorite poem by Rumi that me and a bunch of pals have memorized and say aloud together as a toast sometimes...

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: Seek joy and genuine connection through music. Dj the music you love. Technical skills come with time and are secondary to selection and expression of self, so don't fixate too much on mistakes. Uplifting your peers and supporting each other is one of the most meaningful parts of artistic community - if you have resources (and especially privilege) be open to sharings your knowledge and skills.

Selene has been transmitting techno, ambient and electro beats on the airwaves of intergalactic.fm since 2012 — first as the host of The Teahouse on IFM’s beloved ambient channel The Garden, and then on The Dream Machine as the host of Special Circumstances. Originally schooled in acid house at full moon raves by the Wicked Soundsystem in the San Francisco Bay Area, she moved to New York where she developed her love of techno thanks to events like the legendary New Music Seminar. Any additional free time was spent digging through crates at Temple Records in Soho and throughout various sidewalk sales and flea markets in the city. Records from this Vortex Traks podcast are from this era.
