This mix/performance was part of the MEG-AIMP / Réveil des Archives Sonores series:

I was invited to do a vinyl DJ set at the Museum of Ethnology of Geneva (MEG) directly from their extensive archive material. 💫  

On that day, I was given access to dig in a Collection that belonged to Marco Botta, a foreign affairs Swiss diplomat who accumulated records (and newspapers) from all his trips around the World. 🌎 After his death, his family donated the vast Collection to the MEG. It contains folklore & modern music from all over the world up to the 80s. Several big shelves of vinyl from South America, Europe, Oceania, Africa... subdivided by countries. Around 5000 records, most in pristine condition! 

With the little time at my disposal, I decided to focus on Africa, because of my link to it, extensive travels around North and East Africa, my readings about the forging of the Portuguese 1st Global Empire circumventing Africa on their way to India, the many documentaries about the continent I saw, and my interest for its many cultures & music. 

For 4 hours, I searched through the collection, could hear the music, and made a selection. Right after, I played a 1 hour and a half set with the records in public. The set was recorded, filmed & broadcast on WAV33.

I had 2 turntables and a Pioneer mixer at my disposal. I created spontaneously a mixed set, at times overlapping tunes and using effects, especially in the first half hour which features more tribalistic music and sounds sometimes otherworldly.   

I started with an imaginary Ancient Egypt track from a record of a Tutankhamun exhibition in Seattle from 1976, followed by an oud song from the Ottoman Period era by a well-known Egyptian Musician. Then went into Tuareg incursions, tribalistic music, Portuguese colonies (Cabo Verde, Angola...), circumvolution of Africa passing the Cape of Good Hope, all the way to the other side through the various lands (South Africa, Mozambique, Kenya, Ethiopia...) and Islands off the coast of Africa (Maurice, Comoros, Seychelles...) in the Indian Ocean as far as La Reunion and Zanzibar.

Réveil Archives Sonores #18: @Cobeia

For a 1h30 set, the guest artists take us on a musical journey through their personal selection of sound archives.

Cobeia is a DJ and record collector from Geneva. He is also the curator/organizer of Ecoutes au vert (EAV), a series of musical events that has been running since 2006. Over the years, he has organised many concerts and evenings of electro-acoustic, African, No Wave, Electronic, Disco and Experimental music, with talented local and international artists.

Curious to explore a wide range of styles, he unearths gems through long digging sessions. Traditional and modern African music, Outernational, Jazz, Afro-Funk, Post Punk, Disco, Cosmic, Italo, Wave, Electronic, Ambient, Experimental... are just some of the genres he loves. Music that often features a mix of instruments, synths and drum machines, with an analog sound in a computerized world. ;)

Cobeia has mixed at venues & festivals in Geneva, Switzerland, Berlin, Thailand and Vietnam.

A few years ago with Ecoutes au vert, he organized a concert by the traditional Kenyan group Ogoya Nengo & the Dodo Women's Choir Group in collaboration with the MEG.

The records played during this DJ set come from the Marco Botta collection, acquired by MEG in 2011. The collection comprises almost 5,000 LPs (33rpm), released on a multitude of labels from around the world.

This was my live solo debut, as part of the sound performance series Sonic Specters. Between Nostalgia and Anticipation.
I am grateful to AIL (@ailvienna) and Struma+Iodine (@strumandiodine) for making me a part of this beautiful program. Playing alongside Perila was a great experience, as was shaking the ceiling of the Kassenhalle.

Antediluvian Rocking Horse - "We Plot the Lost"

Formed 1994 St. Kilda, Australia, Antediluvian Rocking Horse was an audio project maintained by two core artists credited as DJ2 and DJ3. DJ2 is Paul Wain, a sculptor and graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts. DJ3 was Susan King (R.I.P), a collage artist, writer and anti-copyright advocate.  The project produced music and soundscapes that are entirely recycled from other recorded works.

The pair took further inspiration from Dada and Situationist texts and practises. ("Dada" is a term employed by French children to signify hobby horse. This translation, presumably, provided the spur for the project's name.)

The composer Ollie Olsen was also a member for recording sessions.

In 2018, while preparing for the annual show at HFBK Hamburg, I accidentally discovered tonal spots on the wooden floor when something I dropped caused a resonant sound. Exploring further, I mapped these spots across the room and marked them with small stickers.

For the exhibition, I transformed the entire floor into an improvised instrument, like a large xylophone. During the performance, I responded spontaneously to the sounds and the audience, who stood on the resonating surface, becoming part of the piece. This interactive soundscape revealed the hidden musicality of everyday materials and space.

Since his teens, Cobeia's been an avid listener collecting music on Vinyl, CDs, MDs, Tapes & Digital. Growing up in a multicultural family & environment in Geneva, he enjoyed the vibrant local squats and Swiss alternative scenes; studied filmmaking in London from 96 to 99 before regular stays in Berlin during the 00s. 

Among other trips, he traveled extensively throughout Eastern and Southern Europe, North & East Africa, as well as Southeast Asia, further expanding his Music appreciation. ✨

He has been continuously curious about life & art, passionately exploring underground culture ever since. Since 2001 he's been a dedicated DJ, record collector, cultural actor & curator/promoter.

Aldarrax is an experimental music and sound art label based in Blanca, a small oasis in the arid regions of Murcia, in southern Spain. The main objective of the label is to connect people and territories through sound, to build community and to make space for experimental sound practices. Half-made music, new collaborations and unorthodox recording techniques are at the core of the label’s editorial line. 

Occasionally, artists are invited to create specific works, proposing collective improvisation sessions to generate spontaneous music. Field recording, soundscape composition and DIY instruments which incorporate local materials are encouraged. We resonate with peripheral, dissident and strange music. Aldarrax holds music as a ritual and animistic tool that strengthens bonds and works on bodies to create altered states of consciousness in autonomous zones. We are interested in repetitiveness, broken rhythms, trance-inducing sounds and durational practices that search for these other realms beyond the human.

biography / statement

Ronald van der Meijs is a contemporary artist in the field of sound and installation art. He was born Tilburg in 1966 and lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He graduated cum laude at the department of Architectonical Design at AKV|St.Joost Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Avans Hogeschool, Breda Netherlands in 1993. He had its own architectonical design practice from 1993 - 1999 and worked as a part time tutor at the art Academy AKV|St.Joost. After that he was a senior designer at BRS Premsela Vonk Spatial & Graphical design firm in Amsterdam for one year. From 2001 he started working as a contemporary artist in the field of sound art by experimenting with creating imaginary architecture by spacious sound design audio works and soundscapes. Slowly his sound works transformed into spatial art installations that generate sound. From 2003 to date his main focus is sculpture and installation art in public space, art biennials and art initiatives, museums and galleries. He received the Haarlem Vishal Art Prize 2015 in the Netherlands, was nominated for the Prix Ars Electronica '17 Switzerland and was shortlisted for the Witteveen & Bos Art and Technology Prize 2018 in the Netherlands. He has exhibited in Europe, Asia and North and South America. Among others, IJsselbiënnale ‘23, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Dordrechts Museum, Verbeke Foundation Antwerp, DordtYart in Dordrecht, Fabbrica Europa Florence, Centro de Arte Complutense Madrid, Triennial New Media Art at National Art Museum Of China Beijing, Sculpture Space in Utica New York, File in Sao Paulo, Land Art Biennial Mongolia, ERES Foundation in Munich and at the Sanaa Building Zollverein Essen University of Arts, Kapelica Gallery in Ljubljana. His work in public space as temporary and permanent installation art includes an art commission from the Dutch Atelier Rijksbouwmeester for Governmental Buildings where they granted him a large sculptural commission for Europol's new headquarters in The Hague. Besides exhibiting his art installations, he also performs with them in order to create a new dialogue between the installation, the generated sounds and digital synthesis techniques that form a new intermediary with the audience.

Van der Meijs develops site-specific installations that show how we relate to nature in our fully designed technocratic society. These technical structures are a reflection on the location. In his research into 'ecological sound art', the concept of acceptance plays a key role by creating a new dialogue between nature and the site-specific art projects. Therefor, a new relationship between public, technology and nature is explored. Each work is a metaphorical and conceptual translation of sound, space, time and material. Through exhibitions, interventions and sound performances, alternative experiences are offered that make us reflect on how we view and interact with nature, our culture and the planet.

Unpredictable or slow natural processes control the mechanical installations and form a generative concept of sound, space and time. This process acts as a natural sequencer, generating a sound composition that constantly changes and parallels nature itself. Here, both the installation and the viewer must accept the conditions of these natural elements. To explore this tension between desire and acceptance, he uses nature and the phenomenon of growth and decay. Both with specific qualities and inseparable. It is part of an ongoing process to create a dialogue between the installation, nature and the audience.

His sound performances with semi-acoustic installations are based on the research of creating a new sonic dialogue with the sculptural acoustic installation by amplifying the sounds created by the growth and decay of the installation structures. The aim is to generate a broader experience of the installation as a generative object by drawing parallels between the immersive atmosphere of highly amplified processed acoustic sounds and the slow changes of its entire identity and atmosphere. The acoustic instruments in his installations are often combined with digital synthesis techniques to extend the instruments' timbral capacities. The musical 'drones' generated by the installation are often based on minimalist structures and explore the inherent spectral properties of sound and their ability to transcend time and space.
