Chapter VII: Helmara's Message
Synopsis: The Vision of Helmara
The atmosphere, despite the recent alliance, was charged with tension and mystery. The wolves rested vigilantly, their eyes glowing in the darkness, while the human group regained strength.
As night fell deep and the whisper of the wind rustled through the trees, Thorlund, exhausted, fell into a deep sleep. But this was no ordinary sleep. As he crossed into the dream realm, he was greeted by an imposing figure: Helmara, his foster mother and the witch who had shaped his destiny.
Helmara's Vision:
In his dream, Thorlund appeared in a vast mist-shrouded void, with a purple sky and lightning illuminating indistinct figures in the distance. There stood Helmara, wrapped in a black robe with runes that glowed with a golden radiance. Her eyes burned like liquid amber, and her voice echoed like an echo in the void.
"Child of rebirth, ” Helmara began. “You have overcome many trials, but what awaits you will test not only your strength, but your soul as well.”
Thorlund bowed his head in respect. “Guide me, mother, what shall I do?”
"In the northern lands, beyond the frozen mountains of Helskorn, lies the valley of wandering souls, ” Helmara explained. "There lies an enchanted ring, forged by the gods and bathed in the blood of demons. Its wearer gains unmatched power, capable of matching Sigurd himself. But this ring will not be easily claimed. It is protected by evil spirits, guardians of a power that does not belong to mortals."
The Challenge of Magic:
Helmara raised a hand, and a series of images appeared before Thorlund: a dark gorge filled with tortured souls, an ancient temple with runes that moved as if alive, and a giant spirit wreathed in fire guarding the ring. "These trials are not overcome by brute strength alone, ” Helmara continued. "You must use the magic I taught you. Learn to manipulate the terrain, to summon the essence of the runes, and to confront evil in its own domain."
Helmara raised her staff, and a shard of light descended toward Thorlund. "This vision is both a warning and a blessing. You will carry with you a fragment of my power, but it will be your wits that will decide if you survive."
Before disappearing, Helmara bowed to Thorlund, her eyes full of pride. "Remember, my son: you are not alone. Your brotherhood is your strength, but this challenge will be your personal test. The magic you ignored until now will be your ally. It is time to accept it."
The Awakening
Thorlund awoke startled, with Helmara's words still echoing in his mind. The Drengrsvard sword glowed faintly at his side, as if it had been touched by Helmara's power in the dream. The wolves watched him silently, and the rest of his companions were beginning to awaken.
With a solemn expression, Thorlund gathered his group around the campfire. "I have had a vision. A new challenge awaits us, but this time it will not only be with sword and shield. It will be with magic, and I will need your help."
Sigrún arched an eyebrow. "Magic? I thought that was Helmara's thing - why now?"
Thorlund stood up, his voice steady. "Because it's the only way to defeat Sigurd. And because this is bigger than us. In the mountains of Helskorn there awaits us a power we need. But the road will be the hardest we have ever faced."
Eirik roared, slamming his axe against the ground. "If battle awaits us, let it come! There is no evil this group cannot crush."
Ivar, ever cunning, muttered, "But this time, we must think like Helmara. Magic, traps, trickery. If we are to survive, we must outwit our enemies."
Toward Helskorn:
The group began to prepare for their journey north. Fenrir's wolves, led by Skoll, offered to guide them through the icy paths. As they walked, Thorlund practiced the runic magic that Helmara had shown him in dreams, beginning to summon small barriers and manipulating the wind in his favor.
