The song tells the story of a Jewish boy, after the first world war, who sells cigarettes to survive on the streets. He depicts his tragic fate; having lost his parents, his younger sister has died on the bench and eventually he loses his own hope.

Remix ID is a cultural project from Timisoara, Romania. Documenting the different ethnicities in the region, artists create a remix of sounds, music, voices and the immaterial picture of the ancient ways of life with the vibrating sounds and flash lights of the city, the insane hunt of everything new. This creates a bridge to the immaterial cultural heritage, with a deeper going resonance to where we are – here and now. Furthermore the project seeks answers to burning questions of the togetherness in-between generations.

"Freedom" marks the 19th album by Namasthay, a poignant tribute to the festival of Pessah and the enduring spirit of liberation it symbolizes. This album celebrates the themes of freedom and cultural heritage, featuring traditional songs in the rare tongues of Ladino and Judeo-Piemontese, languages that carry the legacy of an ancient past into the present.

Namasthay weaves these ancestral tribal melodies with contemporary sensitivity, honoring the journey from bondage to liberty that Pessah commemorates. "Freedom" is an auditory mosaic, where the rich timbres of history meet the voices of today. Rahel Jarach and her family lend their vocals to this project, bringing the stories of generations to life with every note. The album culminates with a special guest appearance by Aki, whose beautiful flow graces the final track, adding a modern resonance to the timeless theme of freedom.

Crafted with respect and a deep understanding of the festival’s significance, "Freedom" resonates as a modern celebration of freedom’s journey, echoing the hope and resilience of the human spirit.

Professor Lillis Ó Laoire, performs a set of traditional songs and shares the history and folklore behind them.

This presentation took place on 19th August 2022 as part of Galway Arts Centre’s presentation of Array Collective’s 2021 Turner Prize winning 'The Druthaib’s Ball'. Galway Arts Centre presented a weekly series of public events with social justice groups, artists, academics, and musicians that takes place in the Turner Prize winning installation or síbín with talks, workshops, traditional music sessions, dance, storytelling and song.

Lillis Ó Laoire is an award-winning sean-nós singer from Gort A’ Choirce in County Donegal, who combines performance and academic practice. His performance will present both údar or brí an amhráin, and the songs themselves. Some of these songs are lighthearted and rhythmic while others plumb the depths of the human soul. The performance will deal with the stories and background of the songs prior to singing them. Topics will include unrequited love, a staple of sean-nós song and other more historical material.

"فوزي سعيد" هو فنان وموسيقي وُلد في الموصل عام 1941. تعلم العزف على آلة العود والكمان، ثم انتقل إلى بغداد للتعرف على الوسط الفني والتفاعل معه. بدأت مسيرته الفنية عندما ظهر في برنامج "ركن الهواة" الذي كانت تبثه "الإذاعة والتلفزيون العراقي الحكومة". رغم كونه موصليًا، غنى العديد من الأغاني البغدادية، وكان يرافقه في معظم حفلاته ولديه "أركان وفراس". هو ملحن أيضًا، حيث سجل ألبومات غنائية موصلية من ألحانه، بالإضافة إلى أنه تعاون مع الفنان "زكي إبراهيم". عُرف "فوزي سعيد" في الأوساط الفنية بلقب "فوزي سعيد الحزين" بسبب استخدامه للمقامات الحزينة في أغانيه، مما أضفى جوًا عامًا من الحزن على أعماله. من أبرز أغانيه على "مقام الصبا" الحزين هي "أشكان الدلال أشكانت أسبابو"، وكان يُعتبر مُطرب التفاصيل الدقيقة للحياة اليومية في الموصل.

يعود تاريخ الشريط الحالي إلى أوائل السبعينيات، ويتضمن عدة أغانٍ شعبية باللهجة الموصلية. الأغنية الأولى، "بحو يحب كلولا"، تبدأ من الدقيقة (1:00 – 3:20)، ويبدو أن "بحو وكلولا" هما أسماء رمزية لشخصيات أسطورية أو خرافية عاشتا قصة حب. الأغنية الثانية، "كن قمّلت الغشتا"، تبدأ من الدقيقة (3:40 – 6:10)، وهي حوار بين سيدة وزوجة ابنها حول "الرشتا/ الغشتا"، وهي أكلة موصلية قديمة تُصنع من دقيق الحنطة بعد عجنه مع الماء والملح، وتُترك حتى تجف وتكون جاهزة للطهي. معني "قمّلت الغشتا" يشير إلى أن الطعام قد تعرض للغزو من القمل بسبب تخزينه في سرداب تحت الأرض خوفًا من جنود الدولة العثمانية الذين كانوا يقتحمون المنازل ويصادرون الطعام. الأغنية الثالثة، "مكرودي يا قلّامي"، تبدأ من الدقيقة (6:47 – 10:16)، وهي أيضًا أغنية شعبية باللهجة الموصلية.

"Fawzi Said" is an artist and musician born in Mosul in 1941. He learned to play oud and violin, then moved to Baghdad to immerse himself in the artistic scene. His artistic career began when he appeared on the program "Rukn Al-Hawa" broadcasted by the Iraqi government radio and television. He also sang many Baghdadi songs, and his sons "Arkan and Firas" accompanied him in most of his performances. He is also a composer, having recorded Mosuli albums of his own songs, and collaborated with artist "Zaki Ibrahim." "Fawzi Said" is known in artistic circles as "Fawzi Said Al-Hazeen"[The Sad Fawzi] due to his use of melancholic maqamat in his songs, which gave a general atmosphere of sadness to his works. Among his notable songs in "Maqam Saba" is "Ashkan Al-Dalal Ashkanat Asbabu,." In his songs Fawzi narrated stories of daily life daily life in Mosul.

This tape dates back to the early 1970s and includes several popular songs in the Mosuli dialect. The first song, "Baho Yaheb Kellula," starts from minute (1:00 – 3:20). "Baho and Kellula" are symbolic names for legendary or mythical characters who lived a love story. The second song, "Kun Qamalt Al-Ghasta," begins from minute (3:40 – 6:10), and it is a dialogue between a woman and her daughter-in-law regarding "Al-Rishta/Al-Ghasta," a traditional homemade Mosuli noodles made from wheat flour after being kneaded with water and salt, then left to dry and prepared for cooking. The phrase "Qamalt Al-Ghasta" refers to the food being attacked by lice due to being stored in an underground cellar out of fear from Ottoman soldiers who would invade homes and seize food. The third song, "Makrudi Ya Qalami," starts from minute (6:47 – 10:16), and it is also a popular song in the Mosuli dialect.

Fawzi Said-Songs of Daily Life in Mosul / فوزي سعيد-أغاني الحياة اليومية في الموصل

"فوزي سعيد" هو موسيقي وفنان من الموصل، وُلِد في عام 1941، ويُلقب بـ "الحزين". يعود تاريخ هذا التسجيل إلى فترة السبعينيات، حيث يبدأ بمقطع موال "مالي غيرك" على "مقام الصبا"، ثم يُقدم أغنية "عفاكي عفاكي"، التي تُعتبر واحدة من الأغاني الشهيرة في ، وتعني "أحسنتِ". كلمة "عفاكي" أصلها كوردي و فارسي وتُنطق (آفارين). تتحدث قصة هذه الأغنية عن حوار بين امرأة وزوجة ابنها، حيث تخاطبها قائلة: "عفاكي عفاكي على فند العملتينو، أنا اتعبتو وانا اشقيتو وعلى الحاضغ اخذتينو"، مما يُعبر عن مشاعر هذه السيدة الموصلية: لقد تعبتُ لتربية ابني حتى جئتي أنت يا زوجته وأصبح ملكاً لك دون أي تعب.

"Fawzi Said" is a musician and artist from Mosul, born in 1941, and is known by the nickname "Al-Hazeen" (the Sad). This recording dates back to the 1970s, starting with the introductory piece "Mali Ghayrak" in "Maqam Saba," followed by the song "Aafaki Aafaki," which is considered one of the famous songs in the Mosuli heritage and means "Well done." The word "Aafaki" is of Kurdish/Persian origin  (Afarin). The story of this song is a dialogue between a woman and her daughter-in-law, where she addresses her saying: "Aafaki Aafaki ala fand al-'amalteeno, ana it'abtu wana ishaqitu wa 'ala al-hazigh akhdhtina," expressing her feelings: "I have worked hard to raise my son until you came, his wife, and he became yours without any effort."

"Namasthay: Beats of Shyness could be the biopic that traces the unconventional journey of a visionary artist whose life is as eclectic as his music. The film opens with young Namasthay carving through untouched snow, creating videos with snowboarding icon Axel Pauporté, embodying the free spirit that would define his career. From shredding slopes to shredding riffs, he co-founds a punk-rock band playing occasionally with bassist Red Bull's daredevil Cedric Dumont, though they remain enigmatically nameless.

At university, a chance encounter on a motor skateboard catches the eye of a producer, catapulting Namasthay to become the face of extreme sports in Brussels on the national stage of RTL TV. With diploma in hand, he dives into the pulsating heart of CyberTheatre and Nirvanet's underground music scene, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Howie B and Laurent Garnier, while Björk's creative aura leaves an indelible mark.

Namasthay's sonic palette deepens, drawing from his brother Alex's collection of Ninja Tune records, immersing him in the breaks and beats that would fuel his own artistic fire. His flair for performance doesn't go unnoticed; film school projects lead to appearances in A6000 and Akro's (Universal) Hip Hop Videos, casting him as an unlikely bridge between the worlds of authority and street culture in 1030 Brussels.

The narrative weaves through Namasthay's evolution as an artist, from a local sensation to a music arranger collaborating with the likes of Piccaya, kindling a friendship and musical partnership that burns bright. The influence of Boards of Canada’s mystic and emotive soundscapes acts as a backdrop to his own maturation, as he moves from the underground scenes to the forefront of spontaneous music creation, embodying the alter ego of Namasthay, his longstanding deviantArt moniker.

He now launches with these albums as Namasthay a new movement of Emo-Spontaneity past-O-present where everything is improvised, sang for the first time, and composed on the go, an ode to spontaneous musical creation where perfection is in the birth of the act.
