Am I literally a fan of Debussy now?!?

I first heard this piece played through the Philharmonia Orchestra's iOS app, and thought to my self... "This would be a pretty good piece to re-interpret."

For this interpretation, Almost every part through the midi file was used through the Vienna Symphonic Library's Synchron Prime Edition, and Hello Free Instruments Small Percussion Crotales. The Solo Violins and Cello came from Performance Samples and Alpine Project.

A stand alone piece for full orchestra, Cornish Soundscape 'An Ancient Land' is also the seminal piece from which all the musical elements of the ‘Ancient Stones of Kernow’ project are derived www.ancientstonesofkernow.co.uk. These include the commentaries that accompany the 'Ancient Stones' tours and the dance theatre piece the ballet Ancient Stones of Kernow 'Mid-Summer Rituals'. These illustrate the character of landscape that inspired the piece. The music for the 'Ancient Stones of Kernow project is a computer generated orchestral simulation. The scores are written in Sibelius score system and the generated "midi" is manipuled in Logic Pro X, using Vienna Symphonic Library.

The theme for this piece was written as incidental music for the stage play 'Merchant of Venice' but remained unused in the final production. Here it is used as the theme for a set of variations with drum set accompaniment; in the the tradition of medieval pipe and tabour.

Flute Dance 'The Merchant's Tune'

The original version of this Quartet was written in the mid-1970's during my final year at the Royal College of Music London. It was give a read through at this time by a group including my professor at the college Edward Walker, who gave the piece its title after a famous beer of the day, and Andrew Findon, who became a leading session flautist. Have recently come across the manuscript, I have extended and revised the piece and produced this midi-simulation.

"Previous Life (Another Life)" is one of the songs I composed during the course "Film Scoring 101" at Berklee Online.
In truth, the assignment included writing the script of a short scene with a free theme, on which each student would then have to compose the relative soundtrack.
The script I wrote is about a thirty-year-old who, on his way to a party with friends, travels along the road that leads to his old house where he had lived his childhood with his parents and his brother. He decides to make a small detour to see his house again. Once he gets out of the car, he realizes that the house is now an uninhabited ruin. There, he will experience a sort of trance from which he will emerge shocked, but which will allow him to seal and at the same time, to preserve in a more serene way, this chapter of his life.

Previous Life (Another Life)

Ancient Stones of Kernow is an arts based project which focuses on the prehistory of the far west of Cornwall, in the very southwest of Great Britain. As a part of the project a body of music was written to highlight the atmosphere of the areas landscape. The seminal musical work of the project The Cornish Soundscape ‘An Ancient Land’ was expanded into this major stage work the ballet ‘Mid-Summer Rituals’. This has the summer solstice practises of the neolithic inhabitants of the Zennor area of west Cornwall at its heart and centres around their ceremonial monument ‘Zennor Quoit’. Which still survives in the landscape today. The work consists of 2 acts each of which is made up of a sequence of atmospheric narrations and theatrical dance episodes.

Give & Take (prelude)

Born in a musical family, Gilles made his debuts on the Ottawa scene as guitar player. After some university studies in musicology and research in semiotics, his interest for descriptive music developed through his meeting with Canadian composer Robert Fleming of the National Film Board (NFB). 

After a career in computer engineering and software development, Gilles now returns to the composition of descriptive music and the pleasure of orchestral writing. Good listening!

Martyn Jackson studied flute, saxophone and piano at the Royal College of Music London and has for over thirty years pursued a career as a performer and music educator. Recently returning to serious composition he has written the music associated with his project 'Ancient Stones of Kernow' which focuses on the prehistory of the far west of Cornwall. He works from his music studio in St. Ives which has recording facilities and is equipped with Logic Pro X and Sibelius software along with Kontakt and Vienna Symphonic sound libuaries, with a full size Oxygen 88 keyboard.
