🇧🇪 Gas over Gravenstafel
“Gas over Gravenstafel” reconstrueert de gebeurtenissen van 22 april 1915, bij het dorp Gravenstafel nabij Ieper. Die dag lanceerde het Duitse leger voor het eerst op grote schaal een chloorgasaanval aan het Westfront. Een geelgroene wolk rolde de geallieerde linies binnen en sloeg paniek bij Franse koloniale troepen en Canadese eenheden.

In de chaos bleven de Belgische Grenadiers in hun stellingen. Zonder degelijke bescherming, met geïmproviseerde doeken voor hun gezicht, wisten zij de Duitse doorbraak te blokkeren en een tegenaanval af te slaan. Hun weerstand hielp voorkomen dat de IJzerlinie alsnog instortte.

Het nummer eert het regiment met zijn motto “Eens grenadier, altijd grenadier” – een leuze die vandaag nog altijd leeft: 22 april is in België de Dag van de Grenadier.
De song laat je het gas voelen in de longen, de wanhoop in de loopgraaf en de verbeten koppigheid van mannen die weigeren te wijken, zelfs wanneer de lucht zelf hen probeert te doden.

🇬🇧 Gas over Gravenstafel
“Gas over Gravenstafel” recreates the events of 22 April 1915, near the village of Gravenstafel outside Ypres. On that day, the German army unleashed the first large-scale chlorine gas attack on the Western Front. A yellow-green cloud drifted into Allied trenches, causing chaos among French colonial troops and Canadian units.

Amid the panic, the Belgian Grenadiers held their ground. Lacking proper protection and using makeshift cloths over their faces, they managed to stop the German breakthrough and launch counterattacks, helping to save the Yser front from collapse.

The track honours the regiment and its motto “Once a grenadier, always a grenadier.” To this day, 22 April is commemorated in Belgium as Grenadier Day.
This song places the listener inside the choking cloud, capturing the terror of chemical warfare and the stubborn courage of men who refused to retreat even when the air itself turned against them.

🇧🇪 IJzerbloed

“IJzerbloed” is een tragisch eerbetoon aan de gebroeders Edward en Frans Van Raemdonck, twee Vlaamse soldaten die in 1917 sneuvelden aan het IJzerfront. Hun verhaal groeide na de oorlog uit tot één van de sterkste symbolen van kameraadschap, opoffering en Vlaamse identiteit.

Het nummer volgt de oudste broer, Edward, die na een nachtgevecht bij Steenstrate het niemandsland in trekt op zoek naar zijn jongere broer Frans. Te midden van gas, modder en prikkeldraad vindt hij uiteindelijk diens lichaam. Terwijl de artillerie verder raast, sterft Edward naast zijn broer, hand in hand, ver van elke vlag of glorie.

“Gulden Leeuw in ’t slijk” verwijst naar de Vlaamse leeuw die hier niet op vaandels wappert, maar begraven ligt in modder en bloed.
IJzerbloed verbeeldt de oorlog niet als overwinning, maar als een broederband die zelfs door de dood niet verbroken wordt.

🇬🇧 Yser Blood
“IJzerbloed” is a tragic tribute to the brothers Edward and Frans Van Raemdonck, Flemish soldiers who were killed at the Yser front in 1917. After the war their story became one of Belgium’s most powerful symbols of brotherhood, sacrifice and Flemish identity.

The track follows the older brother, Edward, as he ventures into no man’s land near Steenstrate to search for Frans after a night attack. Surrounded by gas, mud and barbed wire, he eventually finds his brother’s body. As shells continue to fall, Edward is mortally wounded and dies beside him, hand in hand, far from any flag or glory.

The line “Golden Lion in the mud” reflects how the Flemish lion lies not on banners, but buried in blood-soaked soil.
“IJzerbloed” portrays war not as triumph, but as an unbreakable bond between brothers, sealed in death.

🇧🇪 De Schildwacht

“De Schildwacht” is de Nederlandstalige bewerking van het bekende Franstalige loopgravenlied “Le Soldat Belge.” Het vertelt het bijna mythische verhaal van een eenvoudige Belgische soldaat die ’s nachts de wacht houdt langs de IJzer en drie officieren tegenhoudt — zonder te weten dat één van hen koning Albert I is.

Wanneer de koning hem probeert om te kopen, weigert de soldaat. Zelfs wanneer hem met executie wordt gedreigd, blijft hij zijn bevel uitvoeren: niemand passeert zonder wachtwoord. De volgende dag wordt zijn plichtsbesef beloond met een onderscheiding.

Het lied verheerlijkt geen veldslag, maar de morele ruggengraat van het Belgische leger: plicht boven rang, trouw boven angst. In de modder van de IJzer staat niet een held in uniform, maar een boerenzoon met een bajonet die simpelweg doet wat juist is.

🇬🇧The Sentry
“De Schildwacht” is the Dutch adaptation of the famous Belgian trench song “Le Soldat Belge.” It tells the almost mythical tale of a lone Belgian soldier standing guard along the Yser who challenges three officers in the dark — unaware that one of them is King Albert I himself.

When the king tries to bribe him, the sentry refuses. Even when threatened with execution, he holds his ground and follows his orders: no one passes without the proper command. The next day, his loyalty is rewarded with a military decoration.

Rather than glorifying battle, this track celebrates discipline, duty and integrity — the backbone of an army fighting for survival. In the mud of the Yser, heroism is not about rank, but about a single soldier who refuses to yield.

🇧🇪 Bloedspoor naar Huis

“Bloedspoor naar Huis” vertelt het bijna vergeten verhaal van het Belgische Korps Autos-Canons-Mitrailleuses (ACM), een elite-eenheid van pantserwagens die vanaf 1915 niet aan de IJzer, maar aan het Oostfront vocht. Van Galicië en Kiev tot diep in Rusland bevochten deze Belgische vrijwilligers Duitse en Oostenrijks-Hongaarse troepen — duizenden kilometers van huis.

Na de Oktoberrevolutie van 1917 viel Rusland uiteen in chaos. Bondgenoten verdwenen, het front stortte in en de ACM-mannen werden plots vijanden in een land zonder regels. 🇬🇧 Trail of Blood Home
“Bloedspoor naar Huis” tells the almost forgotten story of the Belgian Autos-Canons-Mitrailleuses (ACM), an elite armoured car corps that fought not on the Yser, but on the Eastern Front. From Galicia and Kyiv deep into Russia, these volunteers battled German and Austro-Hungarian forces thousands of kilometres away from home.

After the October Revolution of 1917, Russia collapsed into chaos. Allies vanished, the front disintegrated, and the Belgians suddenly found themselves trapped in a land ruled by revolution, bandits and civil war. Their only escape was a brutal retreat along the Trans-Siberian Railway, crossing a shattered empire in search of a home that might no longer exist.

This track portrays them as ghost riders of a forgotten war — men without graves, carving a trail of blood through snow and revolution just to survive.

🇧🇪 Merkem, Verdomme
“Merkem, Verdomme” verbeeldt de Slag bij Merkem in april 1918, één van de zeldzame momenten waarop het Belgische leger niet alleen standhield, maar zelf met succes in de tegenaanval ging. Na jaren van defensief lijden aan de IJzer waren de Duitse troepen uitgeput, terwijl de Belgische eenheden eindelijk de kans kregen om terrein terug te winnen.

Onder leiding van generaal Jacques stormden Belgische infanteristen met bajonet en handgranaat vooruit door het ondergelopen landschap rond de Blankaart. Wat begon als een wanhopige verdediging, werd een symbolische wending in de oorlog: België stond niet langer enkel te overleven, maar begon terug te slaan.

Dit nummer vangt dat kantelpunt – het moment waarop modderige loopgraven veranderen in aanvalslijnen, en moed eindelijk weer iets anders betekent dan enkel blijven liggen en sterven.

Merkem is geen nederlaag. Merkem is België dat rechtstaat.

“Merkem, Verdomme” portrays the Battle of Merkem in April 1918, one of the rare moments when the Belgian army did more than hold the line — it counterattacked and pushed the enemy back. After years of defensive warfare along the Yser, exhausted German troops now faced Belgian units ready to advance.

Led by General Jacques, Belgian infantry charged through the flooded terrain around the Blankaart, bayonets fixed, turning mud-filled trenches into assault routes. What began as desperate resistance became a symbolic turning point: Belgium was no longer merely surviving — it was fighting back.

This track captures that shift, when endurance gave way to momentum, and when a nation that had bled in silence finally roared.

🇧🇪  Charge op Burkel
“Charge op Burkel” vertelt het verhaal van één van de laatste echte cavaleriecharges van het Belgische leger, uitgevoerd in het najaar van 1918, in de laatste weken van de oorlog. Terwijl Europa al vier jaar vastzat in loopgraven, gas en mitrailleurs, kreeg de Belgische cavalerie nog één keer het bevel dat uit een ander tijdperk leek te komen: te paard aanvallen met lans en sabel.

Bij Burkel, in Oost-Vlaanderen, stormden ruiters frontaal op terugtrekkende Duitse posities af. Tegen prikkeldraad en machinegeweren in werd het een strijd tussen negentiende-eeuwse eer en twintigste-eeuwse vernietiging. De charge had nauwelijks strategische waarde, maar groeide uit tot een legende — een laatste uitbarsting van furie en koppigheid in een oorlog die al lang elk spoor van romantiek had verloren.

Dit nummer sluit het album af zoals de oorlog zelf eindigde: niet met stilte, maar met een razende galop tegen het onvermijdelijke.

🇬🇧 Charge at Burkel
“Charge op Burkel” recounts one of the Belgian army’s last true cavalry charges, carried out in the final weeks of 1918. After four years of trench warfare, gas and machine guns, the Belgian cavalry received an order that belonged to another century: attack on horseback, with lance and sabre.

At Burkel in Flanders, mounted troops charged retreating German positions head-on, into barbed wire and machine-gun fire. The action had little strategic value, yet it became legendary — a final eruption of fury and stubborn pride in a war that had long since stripped battle of any romance.

This track closes the album the same way the war itself ended: not with peace, but with a desperate gallop into the storm.

This morning I received a letter from another age, a missive that has traversed time. I offer it to you as a preface to this story.

Cul-des-Sarts, August 25th, 1914.

I'm writing to you from the past. It feels strange to know that you'll never be able to answer me or, more precisely, that I'll never be able to read you. That's the game of time that passes and never returns. But no matter that this is a monologue, I wanted to talk to you, to know myself alive through your reading. Isn't it magical that I can exist through you? You will be my voice, then, in the lines that follow.

It's a full moon tonight and the respite of a truce as sudden as it is suspect allows me to take up my pen to write you. I wonder whether, when you open this letter, our country—if it still exists—will at last enjoy the happiness of a lasting peace. A few months ago, I dreamed of something else, of a different summer. In August, before packing my bags for America, I planned to take the coastal road and walk the beach in the early morning. Have you heard of sand yachting? A sort of carriage with four solid wooden wheels, fitted with a sail? A certain André Dumont developed this leisure craft on the beach at La Panne. I wonder if in your time people still practice this unusual sport. I'd like to try it one day, when all this is over, when I'm done with the whistling of bullets and the crash of shells. What wouldn't I give for a sand yacht outing... But I'm wandering. Let's return to today, to this August of 1914.

It's the 25th, we'll soon be crossing the Belgian-French border. I can no longer feel the soles of my feet, the road has seemed endless these past forty-eight hours. The Germans have taken Namur, which we'd been defending fiercely since the start of hostilities, and under Colonel Verbist's orders we reluctantly decided to abandon our positions to take the road to France through the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse. After two days of forced march under a scorching sun, I've finally just received meager rations. We're told the Germans are on our heels and that, mad with rage at having found us in their path, they'll go all the way to the North Sea if they must to annihilate our army, down to the last soldier. I so wished to discover the sea this summer, for the first time. And then to take to sea, end of September. To set sail, for good. Have you ever been to the sea? Have you ever felt on your face the breeze they praise as so gentle? I've been told about the song of the gulls too, and shrimp fishing in the early morning.

It's strangely calm tonight. I'm no longer used to silence. Allow me to pause, just for a moment, to slip a little of this quietude into my memory box. I'll no doubt need it in the days to come. I don't know where we'll be tomorrow, I don't know if this journal will last another week, a month, a year or more. I wonder if I'll see its end or if it will escape me. I'm afraid, sometimes, of not being able to close the book of my life. I'm writing to you in the urgency of a tragic situation but I'd like to be able one day to share with you the return of happiness, as if this war whose cause I don't know were only a nightmare, a painful parenthesis in history. I'd like us to remember it as the last one, as a rainstorm, violent but redemptive. Tell me I was right, tell me that in your time war no longer exists.

This Kentucky history moment is presented by the Kentucky Historical Society, celebrating America’s 250th commemoration. 

107 years ago, World War I ended in Europe, and Kentuckian George Chescheir witnessed the relief of a nation firsthand while serving in France. 

The Great War, as it was known at the time, transformed warfare as we know it and brought conflict to a scale thought inconceivable. After the fighting ceased in France, the international celebrations were momentous, as George notes “they were having torch light parades... singing the Marsailles (sic, Marseillaise), the Star-Spangled Banner... and yelling ‘Vive l'Amérique.’”

Kentuckians were a part of these international moments, and letters like these written by George, give us a first-hand window into this crossroad event.

Blending soft acoustic guitar, gentle strings, and vivid storytelling, the song paints a haunting and heartfelt portrait of soldiers from opposing sides laying down their weapons to share a moment of peace in the frozen trenches.

This track captures the quiet humanity that rose above the chaos of war — a brief, fragile miracle where carols drifted across no man’s land, hands once meant for conflict reached out in kindness, and the world remembered its capacity for compassion. With its emotional tone and historical depth, the song stands as a tribute to hope, unity, and the enduring light of peace amid unimaginable darkness.
