Ninety-seven year young James Scott was born in the mountains of eastern Kentucky into a very large family. Scott shares stories of growing up in the Depression and, as a child, working on the farm to provide food for the family. In 1944, seventeen year old Scott lied about his age to get into the Army. He discusses basic training where he became proficient with rifles and machine guns plus learning hand to hand combat maneuvers.

Brett Jones served for 26 years in the Army, National Guard, and Reserves. Jones shares experiences from his time in the military. When assigned to Arlington National Cemetery, Jones served on the twenty-one gun salute funeral detail. Jones discusses his year long deployment to Iraq and the difference between WWII soldiers returning home via several days on a ship with other combat veterans, and today’s soldier that can be in a war zone one day, and home the next.

9-29-2024: From Arlington to Iraq- Robert Jones Tells His Story

Retired Major General John Raaen was a young Army Captain on Omaha Beach, D-Day in 1944. As part of the elite 5th Ranger Battalion, their job was to knock out the guns located at the top of the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc and secure the roads around the Pointe to prevent the German’s movement. We are re-broadcasting an interview with General Raaen. He recounts his conversation with General Dutch Cota as General Cota encouraged the Rangers to “Lead the Way!”

Korean War Veteran John Ryff joined the Marines because he was working in the factories in northern New Jersey and did not see much future there. He was just seventeen. We are re-broadcasting an interview with Ryff. He shares his story about one of the three most famous Marine battles, the Chosin Reservoir. Ryff discusses his perspective on political and military leadership at the time. Ultimately bombardment from the USS New Jersey gave him battle cover.

January 1963 seventeen year-old Karl Lippard joined the Marines. Lippard explains that he was very adventurous and arrived at Marine Boot Camp with his own parachute and scuba diving equipment. Soon he found himself in Vietnam. Lippard expounds on the first of three key battles that he was involved in-the Battle of the Ca De River Bridge. If he had not engaged the enemy, he and his other Marines would have been annihilated.

12-15-2024: The First Of Three Key Battles That He Was Involved In- Karl Lippard Tells His Story

Having overcome a childhood marked by violence, abuse and neglect, Benjamin Perks has always drawn strength from an innate sense of optimism. Now Head of Campaigns and Advocacy at UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, he helps protect young people in similar situations all over the world. 

“I think it was very clear that we were in a bad spot, though, being dealt a bad hand, but I was somehow optimistic that things would be better.” 

Having recently authored a book about his experiences, Trauma Proof, Benjamin Perks reflects in this episode on a lifetime campaigning for all children to be safe, seen, and soothed, and on how an encounter with a special teacher put his life back on track. 

“When I held my son in my arms, I knew that what had happened to me was now unimaginable to myself… that made me ask the question, if I can heal from it, if I can recover and not transmit it to my child, can we do this for the whole of humanity?”

Marine Karl Lippard fought in three key battles in the Vietnam War. Two of them remained classified for many years. Lippard shares details of the battle of Chu Lai, where he was hit coming out of the helicopter, and the battle of La Bong. The North Vietnamese were focused on drawing our Marines into small skirmishes to annihilate them with the ultimate goal of overcoming the Da Nang airfield.

Marine Korean War Veteran Marty Letellier was just seventeen when he joined the Marines in 1948. His great-great-grandfather was a fur trapper and Indian fighter. Like his grandfather, Letellier wanted adventure and joining the Marines definitely delivered. Marty Letellier recently passed on. We are rebroadcasting an interview with him. In 1950 the North Koreans invaded South Korea and captured Seoul. Letellier was among the first Marines to ship to Korea and he fought at the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir.
