You've heard a million recordings of trains but this one's different. In March 2018 I got a pair of Sennheiser Ambeo headphones, which let you do some rudimentary binaural recording. I thought why not visit the old EMI factory and lab in West London -- now the "old vinyl factory" lofts, thanks gentrification -- where Alan Blumlein invented modern stereo recording in the 1930s. The trains recorded here are modern light rail, but I think they use the same rail lines as the trains that Blumlein and his team recorded in some of the first stereo films almost a century ago. Like all binaural recordings, you really need to wear headphones to get it properly. Recorded with an iPhone 6 and Sennheiser Ambeo headset. It was a Sunday and the site was still under construction at that time, you can hear a busted safety light buzzing.

Félix Blume is a sound artist and sound engineer. 
His work is focused on listening, it invites us to live sonic experiences that enable a different perception of the surrounding. He uses sound as a basic material in sound pieces, videos, actions and installations. His process is often collaborative, working with communities, using public space as the context within which he explores and presents his works. He is interested in myths and their contemporary interpretation, in human dialogues both with inhabited natural and urban contexts, in what voices can tell beyond words.

Born 1960 in Vienna. Austrian composer, improviser and performer. He studied composition with Friedrich Cerha and musicology in Vienna. Besides writing experimental instrumental music, he performs on his own electronic instrument m@ze°2, develops software environments for computer-aided composition and creates generative sound and video environments. Since 2007 professor of composition for electro-acoustic and experimental music at the University of Music in Vienna.

Karlheinz Essl performs on a laptop computer that he has transformed into a live electronic musical instrument. The result is exciting and musical. You just won't hear these sounds anywhere else. He performs solo and in duets and trios, responding with sensitivity to fellow musicians, producing fascinating sound transformations, creating spontaneous surprises, and moving quickly from loops to cacophony to tiny clips of vocal sounds to all kinds of textures and ideas.
